Liverpool Eye Mohammed Kudus And Johan Bakayoko As Potential Anthony Gordon Replacements

Liverpool are being urged to pursue Mohammed Kudus or Johan Bakayoko following Anthony Gordon’s agreement to join Barcelona this summer.

Both forwards have previously been linked with moves to Merseyside during past transfer windows, keeping their names firmly in the Liverpool conversation.

The Reds are said to be in need of at least two wingers, with an additional versatile forward option also considered desirable by the club.

Johan Bakayoko has endured a difficult campaign in the Bundesliga, with some labelling his spell a disappointing one given earlier expectations surrounding the Belgian winger.

Bakayoko has managed just three goals and zero assists from 22 appearances, accumulating only 892 minutes of action in the Bundesliga this season.

His teammate Yan Diomande has significantly outperformed him, posting 13 goals and 10 assists from 36 games and 2,724 minutes in the same division.

Diomande’s minutes-per-goal-contribution figure of 118.43 compares favourably to Bakayoko’s return of one contribution every 297.33 minutes this term.

Bakayoko has dealt with injury struggles this season, and his underlying stats do offer some encouragement, but his two central appearances raise questions about his suitability as a Gordon alternative.

At just 23 years old, Bakayoko’s profile does not appear to convincingly fit the central utility role that Liverpool are reportedly looking to fill this window.

Mohammed Kudus presents a more compelling case, having made 51 senior appearances in a central role throughout his career at various clubs.

The 25-year-old has posted three goals and six assists across 26 Premier League appearances this season, despite playing in a struggling Tottenham side.

Kudus has maintained impressive dribbling numbers even as his overall output figures have declined during what has been a difficult campaign at Spurs.

His per-90 non-penalty expected goals figure sits at 0.11, with 1.51 shots per 90 and 3.32 touches in the opposition box recorded across 1,921 minutes of action.

Whether Tottenham would be willing to sell Kudus just one summer after signing the Ghanaian winger is a key question that remains unanswered at this stage.

The overall preference, fee permitting, appears to lean firmly towards Kudus over Bakayoko as the more suitable option for Arne Slot’s Liverpool side.
