Aston Villa targeting two England internationals to bolster the squad

Aston Villa are eyeing two England internationals to revamp their squad ahead of the Champions League.

Aston Villa’s transfer business is set to begin its hunt immediately to bolster the squad for next season. With the Champions League on schedule, they need better squad depth with balance and similar quality to the first team for the understudies.

As the Premier League concluded on Sunday, Villa have named two targets to sign next season. They are two England internationals from Premier League rivals. Sadly, their current sides failed to qualify for any continental competitions. Thus, a move to the Midlands side could be tempting for them. So who are those two prime targets?

Harvey Barnes (Newcastle United)

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the Magpies winger is identified as one of Villa’s targets.

“Harvey Barnes is among the players on Aston Villa’s transfer shortlist as they try to add pace to their attack for next season’s Champions League campaign.”

The 28-year-old winger is one of the Newcastle players who has been in fine form. Despite the Magpies’ failure to seal a spot in Europe, Barnes remained in the spotlight. He netted 16 times and provided six assists in 57 games in all competitions.

The former Leicester man can operate on both wings, which is certainly a great addition to Emery’s squad. His contract expires in 2028. Moving to Villa is certainly tempting for him as his family is based in the Midlands, plus the fact that Newcastle would be absent from continental competition.

However, the tricky part is The Magpies’ stance on selling him if Anthony Gordon leaves. He is currently being eyed by Bayern Munich for next season. Villa would have to be ready to pounce on him with quite a price, about £38 million.

The Lions might have to sell Morgan Rogers, who could generate £80 million, to leave some space financially. Therefore, the decision to sign the winger with only two international caps would all depend on how Rogers’ situation develops later.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United)

Another target to pounce on is West Ham skipper Jarrod Bowen. He could be an easier target considering the relegation of his current side.

Bowen’s form remains impressive with 11 goals and 12 assists in all competitions. His contract, however, stretches until 2030. So, it would be even trickier for Villa to sign him permanently.

The Lions could try to sanction a loan move as playing in the Championship would be less attractive than competing in the Champions League. However, Bowen himself apparently played down the rumor of his departure.

The Hammers’ captain is expected to stay to help his team bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt. The winger with 22 international caps seems to be more committed to the Irons’ return to the top flight than switching sides to Villa.
