The Best Aston Villa Top Scorer of the season in history

A few Aston Villa forwards have been considered the best top scorer of the season in history based on their number of tally.

The 2025/26 season has finally come to an end. Aston Villa finally sit fourth and picked an unlikely win on the road in the final game versus Manchester City last night. It was meant to be the proper send-off for their opposition’s manager, Pep Guardiola. Ideally, they should have lost but it was The Cityzens which suffered a narrow defeat.

The man of the hour was none but Villa’s frontman, Ollie Watkins. He bagged a brace in a 2-1 win in Etihad, which added his tally up to 16 in the Premier League or 21 in all competitions. He is undoubtedly one of the best top scorers in the club’s history as the former Brentford man has been the club’s top scorer since he joined the Lions in 2020/21 season.

His personal best was in the 2023/24 campaign as he bagged 19 goals in the Premier League plus another five in the Conference League. He even also provided 15 assists in the domestic league.

Throughout the history, there were surely several more strikers who were prolific and managed to become the club’s top scorer in one season but only a few who could be deemed the best. Here are those distinguished ones who did, excluding the time when Villa was in the championship.

Juan Pablo Angel (2003/04)

The former Colombian forward was part of Villa’s squad from 2001 to 2007. Yet, he only became the club’s top scorer once, in the 2003/04 campaign. It was his personal best with 16 Premier League goals plus another seven in League Cup, in which he helped The Lions reach semifinal.

Apart from that campaign, the ex frontman could not be consistent. He only managed to score 62 goals plus make 14 assists in 205 appearances with Villa before his departure.

Dwight Yorke (1995/96 and 1996/97)

The ex-Trinidad international was part of Aston Villa team from 1989 to 1998. He was the key man when Villa won League Cup twice in the mid 1990s. Yorke was the club’s top scorer in two consecutive campaign, 1995/96, and 1996/97, with 17 goals in the Premier League in each season.

Overall, the forward who became integral part of Manchester United’s treble success in 1999, bagged 98 goals and provided 33 assists in total. Yorke also contributed well as Villa finished second in the Premier League 1992/1993.

Christian Benteke (2012/13)

The Belgian forward was once one of the most wanted strikers in the Premier League. He arrived in Villa Park back in the summer 2012 and left for Liverpool in summer 2015.

Benteke became the club’s top scorer during his stay there but his personal best was his first season in 2012/13. The 35-year old frontman netted 19 goals in the league and another four in the league cup. Overall, the former Crystal Palace man registered 49 goals plus 12 assists in all competition for the West Midlands side.

David Platt (1989/90 & 1990/91)

He was one of the most prolific attacking midfielders in Aston Villa history. The former England star in 1990s became the club’s top scorer twice in 1989/90 and 1990/91 campaign with 19 goals in the top flight league each season.

Platt joined Villa in 1988, when Villa was still in the second tier, from Crewe Alexandra before leaving them to ply his trade to Italy, whose top flight was considered the best league in the world. Platt who stole the spotlight with England in 1990 FIFA World Cup, registered 60 goals and four assists only in 138 appearances. He eventually left the Midlands side to Italian side, Bari, in 1991.
