Aston Villa have won various major and minor competitions with 26 trophies in total.
Aston Villa have just ended their title drought with their Europa League triumph in the midweek. That certainly adds up to their major trophy collection. Nevertheless, as Unai Emery himself said that they might not be one of the big four or even the big six in the Premier League. Their total number of trophies are still less than Arsenal or Tottenham. Yet, Aston Villa have had all sort of major domestic titles and continental ones, including the European Cup.
Aston Villa have won seven league titles. Yet, five of them were clinched in the 1890s. That was the time when the Villans were once the elite in English football. They enjoyed league titles in 1893/94, 1895/96, 1896/97, 1898/99 and 1899/1900. Back then, the top tier was still known as the First Division.
Meanwhile, the remaining two titles did not arrive in Villa Park until 1909/10 and 1980/81. It was a long title drought in between and has been ever since.
In the second tier, Villa also did become the champions twice in the 1937/38 and 1959/60 seasons to secure the return to the top flight. The Birmingham side was even once relegated to the third tier in 1969/70 and had to wait for two years to bounce back to the Second Division in 1971/72.
In terms of domestic cups, Aston Villa also have won seven FA Cups, plus five EFL League Cups. Their best campaign in the FA Cup was, once again, in the 1890s. The Villans lifted the trophy twice in 1894/95 and 1896/97. In the previous decade, the 1880s, they snatched their first one in 1886/87 after beating West Bromwich Albion 2-0 in the final.
The remaining four titles were clinched in 1905, 1913, 1920 and 1957. Their last glorious FA Cup campaign was memorable, as Johnny Dixon and Co. were able to crush the famous Sir Matt Busby Babes’ Manchester United 2-1 at Wembley.
Meanwhile, in EFL League Cups, Villa first won it in 1961 and enjoyed double titles during the 1970s and 1990s. In the former decade, Ron Saunders’ men lifted the trophies in 1975 and 1977. One of his key men was Brian Little, who later won the same tournament in 1996 as a manager. Prior to the 1996 victory, the former Manchester United boss, Ron Atkinson, guided the Villans to their fourth title following their triumphant 3-1 win over Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.
The other three domestic titles were minor ones. They were the Charity Shield 1981 and the Dewar Shield 1899 and 1901. The latter, which was similar to the Charity Shield but between the best professional team and amateur side, was abolished in 1907.
Aston Villa are one of the few non-elite English teams which have won UEFA’s top-tier continental title, the Champions League/European Cup. Tony Barton’s men surprisingly defeated the favourite, Bayern Munich, 1-0 in the 1982 final with the single goal from Peter Withe. On the way to the summit, Villa managed to see off Valur Reykjavik, Dynamo Berlin, Dynamo Kiev and Belgian giant Anderlecht.
Following their European Cup success, Peter Withe and Co. also came out as a winner in the UEFA Super Cup 1982 by thumping Barcelona, the UEFA Winners Cup champion, 3-1 on aggregate. In the first leg at Camp Nou, the Villans were beaten 1-0 but managed to bounce back in a 3-0 victory after extra time at home in the reverse fixture. The second leg match was notorious for the Barcelona’s brutal fouls leading to two red cards on their side.
This season, The Lions just added their continental title collection after dismantling SC Freiburg 3-0 in Europa League final in Istanbul a few days ago. Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers were the ones on the scoresheet.
Prior to this year’s glory, Villa’s most recent silverware was a minor trophy, the Intertoto Cup, a qualifier competition for the UEFA Cup main tournament. They snatched it in 2001 with Paul Merson, David Ginola and Juan Pablo Angel in the squad.
