Aston Villa is currently linked to signing an English winger who is playing for an Italian Serie A side in the summer transfer window.
Aston Villa transfer could likely include an Englishman in the Italian top flight. His recent form has gained interest from several English clubs. That aforementioned player is Bologna man Jonathan Rowe. The 23-year-old winger has been impressive lately with Rossoblu. According to a report in Gazzetta dello Sport, Aston Villa is in the race with Chelsea and Manchester United to bring him back to his homeland after playing abroad.
Rowe’ contract situation
Rowe just joined Bologna last summer for £17.32 million from Marseille. He is tied to the contract until summer 2029, but Rossoblu might cash him in should the potential suitor be willing to meet the price tag.
He could be sold for around £30-35 million. Chelsea has reportedly been ready to pay up for £34.64 million. Rowe’s chance for returning to England than for staying is definitely higher. The former Norwich City man would definitely choose the team which has a continental schedule next season. It is something which Bologna would not likely have, as they are currently in the mid-table.
Villa, whose scouts have been monitoring him, could make their move, as they could guarantee more regular minutes than The Blues or The Red Devils with their more star-studded squad. Rowe, who bagged a goal from a curling shot in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals against Villa, could be the upgrade for Jadon Sancho, who has not been able to live up to the expectation. Considering his age, the London-born winger can take Buendia’s spot or Morgan Rogers‘, who may also depart in the summer.
Rowe’s venture in Europe began in the 2024/25 season. He moved to Olympique Marseille, initially on loan from Norwich City, which was competing in the second tier. Despite only registering three goals and four assists in 31 games, his form impressed his boss, Roberto De Zerbi. The winger completed his move to France for £12.99 million after being part of his squad when his team finished second in the league.
Unfortunately, earlier this season he was involved in an ugly fight in the dressing room with Adrien Rabiot following OM’s defeat in the Ligue 1 opener to Rennes. Eventually, both are sanctioned to move out to Italy.
Initially, Rowe struggled in Renato D’Allara. Nevertheless, he has slowly made improvements since January of this year. Since then, he has netted eight goals and provided four assists, including a stunning winning goal from an overhead kick while his team thumped Napoli on the road last weekend.
This summer, Rowe could be following the footpath of Dan Ndoye, Joshua Zirkzee, Ricardo Calafiori and John Lucumi, who plied their trade in the Premier League. The ex-Marseille man might have a better shot to thrive than them with Villa. The Midlands side is the best place for him to develop into a better player. So far, he has yet to earn the Three Lions’ senior team call-up. Rowe has only made 10 international caps with the England U21 side.
