Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool: brilliance behind closed doors

The big 7-2 win by Aston Villa over Liverpool in the 2019/20 season was one of their memorable performances in Premier League history.

Ahead of the meeting versus Liverpool this coming Friday, the match in the 2019/20 season is definitely the one to remember the most. An unexpected victory with big score against The Reds might inspire Ollie Watkins and Co to run rampant on the pitch on Friday considering Arne Slot’s side also have squad crisis on their own.

In the early campaign of 2019/20, Aston Villa snatched an unlikely big victory over the Premier League reigning champions, Liverpool. The final score was shocking, even beyond all fans’ wildest dreams. A 7-2 rout in Villa Park was a historic victory for The Lions.

Such marked their remarkable campaign at the start of the season. Dean Smith‘s men secured their fourth win in the first four games. It was Villa’s best start in the English top division since 1962. Sadly, it was staged behind closed doors without a single fan cheering for such triumph. Villa’s boss shared his comment after the game while doing an interview with BBC.

We never dreamed of getting a result like this. The performance was outstanding from start to finish. We created an awful lot of chances against an exceptional defence and team. We had to work very hard.”

How did Villa become superior in the game?

The Villans started off the game well by taking advantage of the Reds’ poor defence. Liverpool had to field their second fiddle between the sticks, Adrian, following Alisson’s shoulder injury. Unfortunately, his woeful pass into the six-yard box led to Villa’s first goal, as Ollie Watkins picked up the wrong pass and bagged an opener in the fourth minute.

The former Brentford man added up his tally in the first half in the 22nd and 39th minutes. His run and positioning in Liverpool’s backline brought a nightmare throughout the game. John McGinn then tripled their lead after Mo Salah netted a lifeline. It was 4-1 before the interval.

In the second half, Jurgen Klopp’s men unfortunately could not turn the table. In fact, they conceded three more. Ross Barkley scored his first goal on his debut before Jack Grealish notched up a brace with Mo Salah’s second goal as a shout in between, which turned out to be only a consolation goal.

Jack Grealish and Co.’s superiority in the game might be stark judging from the scoreline. Yet, it was mainly due to the Reds’ dismal form at the backline. Adrian’s early blunder did help Villa gain more confidence to dominate the game. Joe Gomez’s form was under criticism too. He was eventually substituted by Fabinho.

Liverpool’s high defence line and lack of pressing played their part in their embarrassing defeat. It was their first loss with seven goals conceded since 1963!

The Reds boss appeared to admit that the lack of pressing the opponent contributed to his team’s woeful performance.

We can defend the gaps much better than we did tonight. But if you don’t speak, you can’t defend it, that’s not possible. We can defend the balls in behind much better, we do usually by pressing the guy with the ball. We didn’t do that. The problem for that was we lost the ball really in the wrong moments. The protection was really, really bad.”

Despite this stunning win and start in the campaign, Dean Smith failed to guide them finish strong at the end of the season. They only sat 11th and missed out the top ten finish.
