Davis Thompson set the tournament record last year when he blitzed the John Deere Classic to record his first-career PGA Tour win.
On Sunday, he’ll have the chance to join Steve Stricker, Deane Beman and David Frost as the only players to go back-to-back at TPC Deere Run. Thompson will start Sunday one shot clear of a group that includes Max Homa and Emiliano Grillo.
Thompson will go off last with David Lipsky, but expect Homa, the fan favorite, to have all eyes on him.
The six-time PGA Tour winner has been struggling to find his game since last year’s Masters, but has put together three solid rounds at TPC Deere Run that have him feeling excited about a Sunday in contention instead of another weekend deep in the process of trying to find his better golfing self.
“Just fun,” Homa said Saturday after shooting three-under in Round 3. “Golf is just been very boring for me this year. I haven’t had a whole lot of stress, and you want to be stressed out. So I look forward to the butterflies in the morning. I look forward to the first tee shot. It’s just nice to get to feel that again.”
Homa will tee off with Grillo at 1:35 p.m. ET.
Forty-five minutes before Homa and Grillo peg it, amateur Jackson Koivun will start his round. The 20-year-old Koivun is expected to be one of the PGA Tour’s next stars once he turns pro. Koivun has already earned his PGA Tour card via PGA Tour University Accelerated. He will start Sunday four shots back of Thompson but has the firepower to go low and make a run at becoming the latest mature to win on the PGA Tour.
