With Bukayo Saka suffering a long-term injury and Arsenal struggling to cope with his loss, there has been some rumors of the club reaching out to FC Porto to recall Fabio Vieira.
It’s time to review this potential move and it’s time to review the pros and cons of Fabio Vieira returning to the club in January 2025.
Potential Bukayo Saka replacement – Vieira has featured on the right flank for Arsenal in the past and has featured as an inside forward from his playing days with FC Porto. With Saka injured, Vieira can support from the No. 7 position, should he return to Arsenal.
Depth Option – With Saka suffering an injury as well as Raheem Sterling also getting injured as well, Arsenal are seriously lacking in attacking depth. Recalling Vieira back will serve the team well, as he’d add to the depth option in attack. With Arsenal still active in four competitions, Mikel Arteta will need every hands on deck to support the team.
Terrible Injury Record – In his time at Arsenal, Vieira has suffered two major injury absences, missing out for 50 days for a foot injury and 83 days following groin surgery. Even in his second stint with FC Porto, the Portuguese attacking midfielder suffered a muscle injury that kept him out of action for a couple of weeks.
Arsenal is having their fair share of injuries and don’t need another player to join the treatment table.
Arsenal Can Do Better – The fact that Arsenal were comfortable sending Vieira on loan to FC Porto in addition to selling Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham tells a lot, and it makes no sense, in my opinion, for the club to recall him on loan because of injury crisis. I would expect Arsenal to delve into the transfer market for a competitive replacement.
