Nicolas Jackson’s loan spell at Bayern Munich has come to an end, with the Bundesliga club confirming the Senegal international will return to Chelsea with immediate effect.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on X, making clear that Bayern had decided against triggering the purchase option months before the season concluded.
Romano posted: “FC Bayern confirm Nico Jackson returns to Chelsea with immediate effect after buy clause not triggered. Bayern decided months ago, see the €50m buy option as too expensive despite Kompany happy with Nico. Chelsea will now decide on his future.”
The €50m buy clause was deemed too high a price by the German club, even as manager Vincent Kompany had expressed satisfaction with the forward’s contributions during the campaign.
Jackson’s return puts the ball firmly back in Chelsea’s court, with the Blues now needing to make a definitive decision on the 25-year-old’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
The striker had not been a particularly prominent figure at Chelsea before the loan move was agreed, and it became clear early that he would not be featuring regularly in Kompany’s first-team plans.
Chelsea had already been exploring the market for potential buyers, with reports of Premier League interest emerging well before the end of Bayern’s season.
Clubs including Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Everton have all been mentioned as sides who could be monitoring Jackson’s availability ahead of the summer transfer window closing.
Jackson has also been representing Senegal at the World Cup, though their exit at the hands of Belgium could now free him up to focus on resolving his club situation sooner rather than later.
One school of thought suggests Chelsea might actually benefit from retaining Jackson as backup to Joao Pedro, rather than rushing to move him on during the current window.
Liam Delap had a difficult debut season with Chelsea, and arguments for him being a stronger backup option than Jackson are difficult to sustain given the evidence of the past campaign.
Should Chelsea find a buyer for Delap, keeping Jackson in the squad as cover for Pedro could prove a more sensible and cost-effective solution heading into next season.
With the World Cup ongoing and transfer activity building across European football, Jackson’s situation is one that could move quickly once all parties turn their full attention to the summer market.
