Aston Villa are set to face SC Freiburg for the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul on May 20.
Aston Villa at last advances to their first final in six years for any competition. It is also their first one in the continental competition after 44 years of waiting. It is bound to be one of their most memorable games in the club’s history, as it is also the first time for The Lions to reach the Europa League final.
In the rollercoaster season when they were winless in the first six games, then battling for the top three alongside Manchester City and Arsenal in the mid-season before the slight setback towards the end in the domestic league, Unai Emery’s men have done the unthinkable.
Compared to their last campaigns in 2024/25, when they progressed to the quarter-final in the Champions League, or in the 2023/24 season, when they went through to the semi-final in the UEFA Conference League, Villa today have more limited squad depth. Nevertheless, they managed to stay consistent in UEFA’s second-tier competition. Now, it is high time to accomplish the mission, beating SC Freiburg once and for all for the long-awaited silverware.
The Bundesliga outfit reaches their first-ever continental final this year. In this competition, they finished seventh in the league phase and saw off KRC Genk, Celta Vigo and Sporting Braga before heading to the summit. Villa, on the other side, had a more convincing road to the final, finishing second on the table and knocking out Lille, Bologna and Nottingham Forest along the way.
The final in Istanbul should be giving the advantage, at least psychologically for them, as it is an English team-friendly one. Moreover, it is also the encounter against a German team in the final, like the European Cup of 1982. Coincidence? Perhaps. It could be a good sign for the Clarets and Blue’s success. Now, it is time to make it true.
The Europa League final between Aston Villa vs Liverpool will be held at 8 pm on Wednesday. The match is set to be staged in Tupras Stadium, Istanbul, which is also the home turf of Besiktas.
The final duel in Europa League between Aston Villa and Freiburg will be available on TNT Sports 1, TNT Sports Ultimate as well as live streaming. The fans can also enjoy this game on HBO Max.
