Aston Villa boss appears to have admitted that his team had not been in their finest form leading to fair result against Fulham.
Aston Villa was heading to matchday nine in the Premier League with a hope to bounce back, returning to their winning ways. Their loss in EFL League Cup in the midweek disrupted their positive trend.
Unfortunately, their last outing while hosting Fulham did not end with three points, but only one point. What was even more disappointing was they conceded through an own goal from the figure who has been praised by the media in the past few weeks, Zion Suzuki. The Spanish boss shares view on the draw result as reported in avfc.co.uk.
“It’s a disappointing result, a fair result. We tried to keep being consistent, improving, getting the result at home. Trying to get our Villa Park, our fortress, and we are in this way. We didn’t win, but we didn’t lose.
“The last matches here, through Champions League and Premier League, we are getting better, but today was disappointing because we didn’t win. The result is fair.”
The match was initially more in favour of The Villans. They had more chances and even could have opened the scoring, should John McGinn have not missed the penalty. Fortunately, Nicolas Jackson did not squandered when he had the opportunity.
The Cottagers had their own chances in both halves but Suzuki managed to save them. Unfortunately, the Japanese international made his own blunder leading to an own goal. He could not grab the ball from Alex Iwobi’s corner kick safely. It was an unnecessary unforced error.
Villa boss had his own analysis on the game.
“They were breaking our press and we needed our goalkeeper, Zion Suzuki, saving some actions. The first half was, more or less, in good balance for us. The second half in the first 20 minutes, they were pushing, they were dominating, and were creating chances.
“They had corners offensively and we were not keeping the same consistency with ball possession and dominating like we did in the first half, so this draw was a fair result. In the last 15-20 minutes, we were pushing again and creating some chances and we could have won the game.”
Villa did had more chances at the end but the best one from Pau Torres’s header flew slightly wide. They had to share spoils again at home.
Prior to his error, Suzuki’s form was positive. He made four saves, 32 passes, and eight long balls with five of which being accurate. He had one tackle and one clearance too. Unfortunately, he made his unusual blunder which cost his team’s victory.
Probably because of his impressive constant work, Emery did not blame on his mistake.
“It is part of football. We are mature enough to understand that we are making mistakes, and myself as a coach. Every day I make mistakes. The players make mistakes every match, and one mistake in the middle of the field maybe is not relevant. Defensively, mistakes are in the focus. I prefer to speak about the save he did before.”
