Aston Villa are getting ready to take legal action in relation to the comment from the former Liverpool star in the club.
Social media can be a dangerous place. It might have been seen as a tool of free speech. Yet, it does not mean you can go all the way without consequences or public criticism, or worse.
Such applies to anyone, including the former Liverpool star and England defender, Jamie Carragher. He seemed to leave a comment towards Aston Villa fans which included rather inappropriate utterance alongside with slightly condescending words to the club.
According to the report in Mirror.co.uk, Aston Villa through its owner Nassef Sawiris are ready to take this matter further from the official statement of the club.
“Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans. Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football.”
The fans might have been triggered by Carragher’s comment during the podcast Stick to Football when he discussed the rumor of Unai Emery’s being linked to Manchester United’s possible vacant position when they dismiss Michael Carrick in the future.
The former defender initially reserved his compliment on the Spanish boss, considering his success in turning the club which was struggling at the bottom half of the table to consistently competing in the continent, despite losing their stars, this season in particular.
“The reason I’m going to go back at Villa fans is I can’t believe that a manager who is so successful in the Europa League, take a player, if you’d won the Europa League three of four times surely you’ll then want to go for the Champions League.
“Aston Villa will never be Manchester United. I just think he didn’t do well at PSG or Arsenal, and maybe that’s because of egos in the dressing room and that sort of thing. But surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again. There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not.”
The Sky Sports pundits then gave the examples as he explained his point.
“So Real Madrid will take Manchester United‘s best player, they did it with [Cristiano] Ronaldo.
“And there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they’ll take their players or manager, so shut the [swear word] up Aston Villa fans.”
In the end, it is all about perspective. For Villa fans, such a statement does sound offensive and condescending, suggesting that The Lions have no potential to be like The Reds Devils.
Nevertheless, Carra might have just said it based on the number of trophies historically, which is quite justified. The former Liverpool man did explain in his social media that it did not mean to be an insult.
“It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd.”
He did realize his mistake of his poor choice of words to end it, which is utterly unnecessary. He could have said differently.
Lesson learned, in this digital era when everything can be detected and exposed, there is nothing better than choosing the words wisely when commenting. Let us be civilized in our utterance for the sake of our life because one word can make the difference.
