Being hooked at the interval of your first start is a brutal statement, and for Yang Min-hyeok, it has been followed by something even more uncomfortable: a very public dressing-down from his manager.
Westerlo head coach Issame Charaï has openly questioned the South Korean winger’s application, raising fresh doubts about whether the Tottenham Hotspur-owned player can salvage his loan spell in Belgium.
Yang was given his first start of the campaign in a cup tie against Patro Eisden but lasted only 45 minutes before being withdrawn, a decision that spoke volumes about Charaï’s level of satisfaction.
The timing was particularly deflating given that Yang had offered a genuine glimpse of his ability just days before, scoring a stunning curling strike off the bench in Westerlo’s 5-1 demolition of Royal Antwerp.
That goal was expected to serve as a springboard, earning him the cup start, but the opportunity was ultimately wasted and reinforced his manager’s growing frustration.
Charaï had already made his feelings felt through selection, leaving Yang out of the squad for four consecutive league matches before eventually recalling him on October 11th.
The Belgian coach then went further by going on record with his concerns, telling Gazet van Antwerpen, as relayed by Sports Witness: “I haven’t seen enough of that intensity from Yang here so far. Not in training either. He still needs to grow in that area.”
Despite having played in Belgian football since his August arrival, Yang has still not managed a single league start, which represents a troubling return on what Tottenham had hoped would be a productive development loan.
The situation echoes a difficult earlier chapter in the teenager’s career, when Spurs were forced to cut short his loan at Coventry City last season after he could not break into the team regularly enough.
That pattern of stalled loan moves will concern Tottenham’s recruitment staff, particularly given that Roberto De Zerbi reportedly did not factor Yang into his plans in the summer, making regular first-team football abroad essential for his development.
With the memory of the Coventry recall still fresh, the question now being asked is whether Spurs will once again step in to pull their young winger from a loan that is failing to deliver meaningful minutes.
For Yang, the priority is clear: converting moments of individual brilliance, like that Antwerp strike, into the consistent intensity his manager is demanding before the situation deteriorates further.
