The underrated Aston Villa star is likely to stay longer in Bodymoor Heath following the progress of his contract extension.
Aston Villa star who has been considered the first choice initially when he arrived in Villa Park is set to have contract extension following his fine form. Since joining Unai Emery’s squad on free transfer, he has been able to step up when the team needed him the most, eventhough it was not exactly his favourite role.
The Sweden international, Victor Lindelof has been reportedly given a contract extension, according to the Athletic journalist Jacob Tawnswell via his X official account.
“Contract talks are progressing for Victor Lindelof, one of Unai Emery’s best signings in 2025.”
The former Benfica man was signed as a free agent in summer 2025 after his contract with Manchester United expired. He was a last minute player to arrive in Villa Park alongside the loanee Jadon Sancho and Harvey Elliot from The Red Devils and The Reds respectively. They were the last master stroke from Monchi before he decided to leave Villa Park.
Initially, he signed a contract for two years, meaning that it would expire in summer 2027. Lindelof will be 33 years old at that time. However, things has changed rapidly following the mass departure of Villa stars. Their spine players such as Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Martinez, Lucas Digne and Ezri Konsa left after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The centre back who is one of the senior players left in the squad. With the rebuilding is underway, new players are in need of adaption process, he has been undisputed option at the backline as Konsa’s ‘replacement’. Lindelof’s form has been improving too this season despite performing woefully at the opener, including scoring an own goal against Brighton.
The defender with 84 international caps was initially signed as a squad player adding the depth for their continental competition as Villa lacked of experienced figure at the defence line beside Tyrone Mings. Last season, he was certainly not the first choice at the backline and only featured when Emery was in need of rotating the squad, not only playing as centre back but also as right back several times.
His key moments of glory emerged when Villa had to deal with defensive midfielder crisis following the injury of Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana when the season was entering the crucial stages.
The Lions were at the semifinal in Europa League. Emery still had Lamare Bogarde who was Onana’s understudy. Captain John McGinn can be deployed for that position too. Yet, the Spanish boss prefers to play the skipper on the flank and further on the attacking side. He then opted Lindelof as the defensive midfielder ahead of the second leg semifinal versus Nottingham Forest. Villa was beaten 1-0 in the reverse fixture and in need of a convincing win without conceding.
It eventually worked well as The Clarets and Blue crushed the Tricky Trees 4-0 at home. Lindelof was tasked for the same role in the remainder of the season, including in the Europa League final versus Freiburg.
Another key moment was yesterday at St James’ Park, as Jacob Tanswell reported.
“Team-mates praised Lindelof’s top-class professionalism & character last year when he wasn’t playing. Those traits are now being shown on the pitch. A clean sheet was a deserved reward for Lindelof’s exceptional performances. Newcastle was his best.”
Lindelof displayed his top class in Newcastle win. He produced 11 clearances and blocked one shot. The 32-year old defender also made 57 passes, six long balls with two of which being accurate and won one aerial duel. Overall, the Vasteras-born defender has featured in 38 games with The Clarets and Blue and registered one assist.
