Everyone has accidentally butchered someone’s name at one point or another.
But normally that name isn’t “Gary,” and normally that person isn’t a professional athlete. But on the latest episode of GOLF’s Subpar Podcast, former NHL star Brenden Morrow recalled playing a round at TPC Craig Ranch with Subpar co-host Colt Knost and Gary Woodland, and spending the entire day calling Woodland “Jerry.”
“I can read [his bag],” Morrow told Knost and Drew Stoltz as he started to recall the story. “I thought his name was Gary. I’m going to death that I heard one of you jack—-s call him Jerry. So I’m like, ‘Who am I?’ It’s written right on his bag, ‘Gary.’ But whatever, maybe his parents just did it. So I started calling him Jerry the entire round. He should’ve probably corrected me. He didn’t. Then, he got in my car. I drove him to North Park Mall. His now-wife, girlfriend at the time, Gabby, [was there], dropped him off. ‘Hey Jerry, had a hell of a time. I’ll catch you later.’ Still, nobody corrected me the entire day. So he’s forever known as Jerry Woodland.”
Morrow and Woodland also made a hefty wager at the time, betting $10,000 on whether Morrow would win the Stanley Cup before Woodland won a major. Morrow lost in the Stanley Cup Final as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning in his final professional season in 2015. Four years later, Woodland won the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
Morrow still hasn’t paid up, but he’s hoping to host Woodland for a member-guest instead of forking over the $10K.
