For a guy who loves golf, but works in golf, the holidays can be tough on my family. They want to buy me fun, big, cool gear, but I’ve already got it all. Half the time, they’ve also got it themselves as I pass on the collection of items I am so lucky to collect in this role. However, there’s one thing we’ve started to agree on for the holidays: Buy me the stuff I hate buying myself.
Tees, gloves, golf balls, spikes, ball makers, repair tools and club brushes all make the list. Could I get these things for myself through the job? Sure. But that doesn’t mean I can get them quickly, and it never means that I have enough. A stockpile of these items, no matter how large it gets, is always going to hold a high value for me. Here’s a look at the small essentials I can’t get enough of, plus a few bonus items, because who doesn’t want to throw some nice things on a holiday wish list?
I hate using plastic tees. I don’t care if it’s a free tee, or the coolest tee you’ve ever seen in your life. I want wood tees. I also happen to have just enough OCD that I like to use tees that are the same every time I play so I can eliminate that variable. One of my favorites is the micro head tee from Pride Sports. I can’t tell you that it actually helps performance, but it definitely gives that “less-friction, ball-go-far” vibe. I myself am a yellow color band guy, that’s the perfect height for me!

Club brushes are something you never want to have to buy, but you do end up eventually needing to replace, either because of wear or because you end up losing it. I can’t begin to count how many I’ve lost. Especially the small magnetic ones that you use for wedge practice on the range, which happens to be my favorite lately. Please, whatever you do, don’t gift somebody one of those half metal, half polyester brushes.

Again, a high-use item. Also a loss item. Yes, it’s just a towel. But it’s a chance to rep your favorite brand or sports team, add some style to the bag, and there’s even some towels like this one from Ghost Golf that have some functionality. The magnet pick up of the towel makes it amazing for a nice long range session.

I think this one applies to more golfers than anybody realizes. Changing out your spikes keeps your performance at peak level, but the issue is most people don’t even think about it. Giving the golfer you love a fresh set of spikes could be the perfect reminder they need.

There’s not a golfer out there who would tell you that they couldn’t use another cool ball marker, or another cool ball mark repair tool. Tomo Golf is doing some cool things on this front, and they’ve got a bunch of unique designs to choose from.

Bonus item! The greatest travel bag to have ever been created. Seriously. You need to get this travel bag. If you or somebody you loves brings their clubs on a plane more than just once a year, the difference in the Club Glider versus another bag is significant. It’s a game changer. I think every time I go to the airport with my clubs (which is an insane number) somebody stops and asks me about it.
