Aston Villa finally picked up their first home win with European night yesterday over Fenerbahce.
Aston Villa secured their second win in the Champions League after trashing Fenerbahce 6-0. It is their victory at their home turf for the first time this season. European games once again proves to be the moment to boost their confidence and eventually carry on into the positive trend in the future.
Unai Emery himself feels amazing with their big win as he shared his comments after the match as reported in Birmingham World.
We are delighted for the first win at home, we needed it. This is the most important thing about tonight. We achieved the first win at home and how we could manage with different players.
“I think a lot of very good things happened through the good result and giving us confidence and making us as well demanding to keep it for the next matches.”
Aston Villa dominated the game from the beginning although the Turkish outfit were not exactly hapless throughout the game. After conceding the first goal from the birthday boy, Johan Manzambi, Fener had several attempts. At least, two to three chances were created in Villa’s backline. Luckily, Zion Suzuki’s form saved the day.
Prior to the interval, Villa managed to score two more goals from Nicolas Jackson. The Senegal international was contributing heavily in the game and highly rated as the man of the match in Whoscored.com before being substituted by Tammy Abraham, who bagged the last goal of the game. The remaining two goals were scored by Ross Barkley in the second half.
This big win has been a new record for Aston Villa’s matches in Europe. Their previous biggest win record was 5-0, which they secured three times in history. The first one was the first leg of the first round in European Cup 1982 against Iceland side, Valur Reykyavik. The second one was in UEFA Cup 1984. They routed the Portuguese club which has been owned by the same owner of The Clarets and Blue, NSWE, Vitoria Guimares. It was the first leg of the first round too.
The last one was in a plyoff for UEFA Conference League 2023/24 season against John McGinn’s former side, Hibernian. It was the second leg, which led them to seal one spot in the group stage.
Previously, there has been concern that the Lions’ inability to snatch a home win was due to the renovation of North Stand. Until last weekend, they only managed to snatch one draw and suffered two losses in their three home games this season. Some of the players, including Matty Cash has shared his concern how different it was to play with a rather quieter place.
Nevertheless, this big win shows that such is not an excuse. Emery himself underlines it to motivate his team to avoid making it as external reason for their negative result at home so far, as reported in DailyMail.
“Not ideal, but never an excuse. We must accept the sacrifice of being without the North Stand, but we also understand it is for the greater good.
‘Because next season, and for years to come, Villa Park will be a stadium with greater capacity, improved facilities and an even more extraordinary atmosphere.
‘It is like when we have an injured important player. We must accept, not cry, and everyone has to deliver their best to overcome this situation.’
