Most of life as a professional golfer is glamorous. Travel is not.
For those lucky enough to ply their trade in golf, life on the road includes some version of the same experience every week: hotels, rental homes, airports, rental car lines, lost bags, and enough credit card points to fill an ocean liner. And among that group, travel is viewed one way: as a necessary evil, a thing that comes with the pursuit of a lifelong dream.
Hell, even for those in pro golf with the means to pay for every travel luxury, the goal isn’t enjoyment of life on the road. It’s to eliminate friction, to take the hardships of the “road” out of “life on the road” — an annoyance rendered moot by private planes and private chefs and private homes and personal assistants.
Then on Tuesday morning, golf travel became something else altogether. Not a nuisance or a necessary evil or a nothingburger, but a luxury. And it arrived via a totally mind-bending travel perk. Actually, via two of them.
The news arrived in the form of an ordinary press release. Rory McIlroy had added a new partner: DP World, the Dubai-based logistics company that has increasingly stretched its tentacles into golf in the 2020s. DP World provides the naming rights sponsorship to the European Tour, and also claims the rights to this week’s DP World India Championship, where McIlroy and others are teeing it up for the second straight year.
Now, though, DP World also provides something else: Two private fitness and recovery trailers for McIlroy that travel with him everywhere he goes.
Seriously.
According to the release, McIlroy will lean on DP World to assist with his exhaustive travel logistics throughout the season, and DP World will assist McIlroy right back by setting up “two personalized fitness and recovery trailers” at every tournament he plays, regardless of where in the world it’s held.
DP World says the interior of the two new trailers will include strength and cardio equipment, a cold plunge, an infrared sauna and a Hyperice recovery station. The goal: to provide McIlroy with the most luxe tournament training and recovery experience of any golfer, anywhere in the world.
Those close to professional golf know that “recovery trailers” have become all the rage in recent years. The PGA Tour sponsors a fleet of trailers that travel from event to event to provide players with a training area, a mobile gym, and a place to receive treatment while on the road. Some players, like Justin Rose, have taken those efforts to another level by souping up RVs with recovery and performance gear in order to standardize treatment and ensure schedule flexibility.
But nobody has gotten anything remotely like what McIlroy is on the brink of receiving: a full-scale, full-time training center dedicated entirely (and solely) to his pursuit of peak performance.
The trailers might not sound like much, but for a pro golfer, they’re a very big deal. During tournament weeks, even the best PGA Tour training facilities fall victim to the same struggles faced by your local gym: players jockeying for equipment, space, and time. And that’s to say nothing of the tradeoffs that occur for international players like McIlroy, who might find different training offerings at the Players Championship than they do at, say, the DP World India Championship. For McIlroy, the new trailers are really about removing a headache that follows many of the grueling weeks on the road. And, for McIlroy, the logic follows that golfers without headaches generally play better.
“Having the same environment to train and recover in every week gives me and my team one less thing to think about and lets us focus on preparing and performing,” McIlroy said in a sponsored post on his social media feeds promoting the new agreement. “When you’re competing around the world, consistency really matters.”
For DP World, the new setup is a small token of appreciation for McIlroy’s willingness to travel the world over for golf tournaments, promoting the game in corners of the world where it is still nascent, like India. For McIlroy, it’s something even cooler: maybe the most impressive travel perk for any golfer, anywhere in the world.
