Aston Villa are in the mix to sign a prolific goalscorer in Europe, who has been in the spotlight over the past few seasons.
Aston Villa have reportedly been mentioned as one of the potential destinations for the prolific goalscorer on the continent. Benfica man Vangelis Pavlidis has been in the spotlight following his goalscoring tally since moving to the Portuguese giants in summer 2024.
According to a report in A Bola via SportWitness, the Greek international seems to be interested in switching sides to England in the future.
“Vangelis Pavlidis is open to joining Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur or another English club to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League as long as Benfica gives the green light for his sale.”
The 27-year-old striker has been Benfica’s key man since he arrived at Da Luz. His contract runs until summer 2029, plus there is an £86 million release clause. This puts his team in a commanding position in the negotiations.
Aston Villa and Spurs are not the only interested sides in securing Pavlidis’ move. Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan, AS Roma, and two Turkish giants, Fenerbahce and Besiktas, made their approach before last summer. Nevertheless, Benfica stood firm to keep him. Pavlidis does not push for a move without an agreement from both parties either. So, unless there is an elite side from one of the major European leagues making a concrete move with an offer on the table to meet the Portuguese giants’ demands, the former AZ Alkmaar man is unlikely to leave his team.
Pavlidis’ goalscoring record seems to be appealing for any team, including Villa, to sign him. He has featured in 123 games, registering 74 goals and 22 assists so far. However, they are very unlikely to be in need of his services unless they lose Nicolas Jackson or Brian Madjo for a high transfer fee. Both are likely to be Unai Emery’s first-choice options upfront.
The Senegalese international is the main forward, with the youngster as his main deputy. Madjo is seen as the long-term solution in the Villans’ attack. The striker, who began his professional career in Germany, is a typical classic number 9 forward who excels in finishing and opening space to create chances in the final third but lacks pressing, pace, and defensive contribution.
Moreover, there is still Tammy Abraham in the squad. Should he be able to improve his form as expected, signing Pavlidis, especially considering his high release clause, might not be prioritised in Villa’s transfer plan.
