“Perhaps it was a good thing” – Aston Villa star on snubbing the post-match conference

Aston Villa star has recently snubbed the post-match conference after his nation’s game in the UEFA Nations League.

Aston Villa star who is also wearing the armband on the international stage, Victor Lindelof, has been in the headlines again. This time, he missed the post-match conference after Sweden were held by Bosnia and Herzegovina to a 1-1 draw in their last outing of the UEFA Nations League.

For a national team skipper, attending a post-match conference to meet the media is expected. Yet, Lindelof did not seem to bother with it. The defender eventually explained the reason and gave his view on the game, as reported by Fotbollskanalen.

“I don’t think the referee’s standard was particularly high. It was a contributing factor [the referee awarding the free-kick], absolutely. It’s done and dusted now. Perhaps it was a good thing I didn’t stay; otherwise, I might have said something stupid.”

Lindelof’s view on the match

The former Manchester United man shared his view on the game, which rather frustrated him.

“I was very frustrated; I wanted to win the match. That was one reason, but I didn’t hear anyone calling out to me either. I’m not going to queue up just because someone wants to talk. Those were the two factors. I thought we played well and deserved three points. It was a combination of those things.”

Such a reaction is understandable. That draw ended their positive run of two convincing wins against Romania and Poland at home. In their first away match, Blågult took the lead through Viktor Gyokeres’ goal in the 61st minute. Sweden could have opened the scoring earlier had the Arsenal man’s goal in the first half not been disallowed.

Then came the equaliser in the 80th minute from Kerim Alajbegovic’s strike from outside the box. It hit the goal frame before going into the back of the net. It was preceded by the free-kick, which Lindelof was complaining about.

Graham Potter’s side are set to travel to Bucharest for their last game of the international break tonight. It will be the reverse fixture against Gheorghe Hagi’s Romania. Lindelof hopes his team returns to the winning ways.

Lindelof and the media

Lindelof appears not to be a fan of being friendly with the media. This is not the first time the defender has been in the spotlight due to his negative response to the press.

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations, Lindelof was not keen on answering questions about the possibility of him being deployed as a defensive midfielder, the role he played for Villa last season, for his nation. He believed that he was a fine centre-back instead.

Then last year, when Sweden were beaten by Kosovo at home and the fans booed the players, the 31-year-old defender did not seem to care about it. He only partly apologised for what he said a month later.
