Aston Villa considering signing John McGinn’s Scotland teammate

Aston Villa have been considering signing John McGinn’s remarkable teammate in the Scotland national team.

Aston Villa have been monitoring situations in several targets on their radar. One of them is the distinguished versatile midfielder who is also the star in Scotland’s national team, Scott McTominay. He has been reportedly on target by the Premier League sides.

According to the report in Tuttomercatoweb, the former Manchester United man is likely to leave sooner than later and several clubs are already circling him.

”Several clubs inquired about him last summer, from Manchester United—who let him go too easily—to Aston Villa, but it’s not a given that a big club like Mourinho’s Real Madrid wouldn’t consider it. “

His current situation

McTominay has been reportedly asking for wages for about £ 6.79 million per season, especially for the contract renewal, should that happen. Unfortunately, it would be more unlikely to happen as he would turn 30 years old this December.

Moreover, his contract ends in summer 2028. Napoli would certainly prefer to cash him next summer rather than releasing him on a free transfer. His asking price could be around £ 25 million, which should be no issue for any Premier League sides, including The Clarets and Blue.

His big roles in the team have often been incredible. It will definitely be a great addition to Emery’s squad. He is likely more into joining the team who would trust him to play regularly. His move to Villa Park could be more sensible than returning to Old Trafford or switching to Madrid, no matter how appealing it might be. Should John McGinn be able to help convince his teammate, Villa could be ahead of their rivals.

Versatile and reliable in big games

The 29-year-old midfielder is a versatile figure on the pitch. He can be deployed as the number 10, central midfielder as well as defensive midfielder. McTominay can even play as center back and the frontman if necessary.

Since moving to Il Partenopei, he has featured in 82 games, netting 27 times and providing 10 assists in all competitions. The Scotsman often contributes heavily in several games through goals and assists or even key passes. He was instrumental in helping Antonio Conte’s men win the league title in the 2024/25 season.

Some of his memorable contributions was when his goal helped Napoli avoid a loss against Inter Milan in the 2024/25 season. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. He did it again in the following season with his brace to share spoils with Nerrazurri in a 2-2 tie.

On the international stage, McTominay also contributed heavily for Scotland. He has made 73 appearances with The Tartan Army, netting 15 times and set up four goals. He was part of Scotland’s squad for their last three international major tournaments, EURO 2020 and 2024 plus 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He regularly scored too in important matches. Two of the stunning ones were his brace in EURO 2024 qualifiers in a 2-0 win over Spain. In the final round, McTominay registered one to help his team earn a point versus Switzerland.
