The putters that powered Team USA's historic comeback at Presidents Cup
On Saturday, U.S. Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker said the Internationals “just made more putts” as the Americans faced a huge deficit heading into the final two sessions.
On Sunday, the putts fell.
Team USA overcame a three-point deficit heading into Sunday to win the Presidents Cup, largely thanks to putting. The stats show that seven of the top nine putters for the event were on Team USA. On Sunday, the Americans made a ton of big putts when it mattered.
There was Cameron Young’s 32-foot walk-off birdie putt on the 16th hole to close out Ryo Hisatsune and give the Americans the first point of the day. Patrick Cantlay nailed a 57-footer from off the green to put his match with International stalwart Adam Scott out of reach. Collin Morikawa matched Hideki Matsuyama’s 45-footer with one of his own early in their match, then made a 31-footer on top of him on the 15th hole to flip the momentum of a match Morikawa would eventually win on the 18th.
Ultimately, Jacob Bridgeman, the PGA Tour’s best putter this season, holed a 4-footer on the 18th green to seal the U.S.’s 11th straight Presidents Cup victory.
Interestingly, all 12 members of the winning U.S. team used a mallet-style putter, with five of them coming from TaylorMade’s Spider Tour family, which was again the PGA Tour’s winningest putter in 2026.
Two of those players, Chris Gotterup, who led the 24 players this week in Strokes Gained: Putting, and Cantlay, played the Spider as free agents. Gotterup and Cantlay were the only gear free agents on the U.S. team this season.
Another four players used one of Scotty Cameron’s Phantom family of mallets. Notably, both Young and Justin Thomas put new putters in play this week, with Young moving from the 10.5 Xperimental Prototype he went to at the Tour Championship to the Phantom 5.5 mallet. Thomas, menanwhile, moved to that 10.5 Xperimental after playing Young’s previous 9.5R gamer for most of the season.
The Phantom 9.5R wasn’t absent from the matches, however, as rookie Jackson Koivun used one to log a 2-0-1 record in his debut.
