Aston Villa might have to be ready for the potential goalkeepers’ injury after the international break following their goalies’ update.
Aston Villa might have no competitive match during the international break. Yet, it does not mean that Unai Emery would relax. He is still working on to prepare the players in the squad who do not get national team call-up for the upcoming friendly matches against Southampton and Sevilla on October 2.
Moreover, Emery also need to monitor those who are playing during the international breaks. 10 players in the squad have been called up for their national teams. They are Zion Suzuki, Victor Lindelof, Matty Cash, Aaron Wan Bissaka, Matteo Ruggeri, George Hemmings, John McGinn, Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Ibrahim Mbaye.
Unfortunately, Villa would have to be ready for the potential goalkeeper crisis after the international break. According to the report in Sportwitness, their number one shot stopper, Zion Suzuki, suffered a rib injury and did not feature in Japan’s first friendly match against Uruguay.
“On Thursday, Japan secured a 3-1 friendly win over Uruguay in Miyagi. Prior to this tie, Zion Suzuki didn’t train with the national team and was on an individual schedule.”
Japan would have their next game against Venezuela in Hiroshima on Monday. The players have been already in the city, including Suzuki. He has been reportedly in recovery.
The Samurai Blue have divided their players in two groups. The first one belong to those who have featured in Uruguay win, while the second one belong to who have not or just played for a few minutes in that game. Villa goalkeeper is included in the latter group.
It would be interesting to see if Japan national team manager, Hajime Moriyasu would field Suzuki or not in the upcoming game. They still have two more fixtures to play, which the former Parma shot stopper could be fielded, in the Kirin Cup tournament.
Considering his importance in Villa’s current set up, Emery surely hopes he would not pick another injury or is not in his best condition to be a starter for the next game after the break versus Brentford.
The problem is Suzuki’s deputy, Marco Bizot, is currently on the sideline too. He is scheduled to return on October 10 or the same date as the Brentford clash at home.
The worst scenario, the goalkeeper crisis, could still be on the horizon. Should Suzuki arrive unfit after the international break or worse, injured, while Bizot is not entirely ready physically or still in recovery, Villa might have to call on their emergency option.
Their third goalkeeper, James Wright, could make his Premier League debut against Brentford, should that happen. The 21-year old shot stopper has yet to play regularly this season or last season. He was mainly an unused substitute in the 2025/26 campaign with only two games with the reserve team.
This season, Wright only featured three matches with the reserve team too. So, he could be prepare to play in both friendly matches or the encounter against Sevilla.
Another option would be promoting Owen Asemota or Blade Earley. Both goalkeepers are under squad rotation in the reserve team this season. The former was an unused substitute in UEFA Super Cup match versus PSG. He has played twice this season with the reserve team, whereas the latter has made three appearances so far.
