Aston Villa appear to be monitoring the situation of Brighton target for the January transfer window.
Aston Villa have been compiling more names as their target for the January transfer window. The most recent one is the South American youngster who has been tipped as the one of the most promising talents in the continent. The aforementioned player is Mauro Coronel.
According to a report in TeamTalk, The Lions are expected to be in a race against Brighton to sign him.
“Brighton are frontrunners in the race to sign a young Paraguayan centre-back at the turn of the year, though Aston Villa could have a say in the matter.”
The 18-year old defender has been under the radar of a number of clubs in Europe. The scouts from English sides and La Liga teams have been monitoring him throughout this year.
The Seagulls are touted to lead the race. They have a history of signing South American youngsters to be moulded in the Premier League in the past few years. The likes of Julio Enciso, Diego Gomez from Paraguay, then Pervis Estupinan, Jeremy Sarmiento, and Moises Caicedo from Ecuador and Valentin Barco, Facundo Buonanotte and Alexis Mac Allister from Argentina are some of the examples.
Unai Emery‘s side certainly need to come up with something more appealing in their offer to lure him to move to Villa Park. If Villa could guarantee him regular minutes in the first team instead of loaning him out to the low tier sides, perhaps they have a bigger chance to sign him.
Coronel’s contract is set to expire December this year. His current side, Nacional, has been keen on extending his stay so that he can develop his game better before switching to Europe. However, the opportunity to move abroad and compete at the top level might be too good to turn down. His potential suitors would not have to spend much on the transfer fee as the defender would be available for free, should he not sign the contract extension with his club.
Coronel was promoted to the first team in 2025. The defender has featured in 18 games so far for Nacional Asuncion. He has yet made his debut with the senior team but has played in the youth sides, including in U17 FIFA World Cup 2025. He helped his nation reach the round of 32 before losing to Brazil U17 on penalties.
Based on the data in FotMob, his form this season has been impressive. His successful passes reach 82.9 %, while the rate of long ball passes is 44.9 %. His successful dribbles is 68.7 % with the rate for winning duels up to 58.6 %.
