Rusnák, who represented Real Salt Lake from 2017 to 2021, dribbled in from near midfield before threading a shot from the top of the box through a defender’s legs and past a diving Rafael Cabral.
The win was the Sounders’ first since May 13, ending a frustrating run that had tested the patience of supporters and coaching staff alike.
Seattle had drawn their previous five consecutive matches, making the clinical nature of this victory all the more significant heading into the business end of the season.
The Sounders now sit at 8 wins, 9 losses, and 8 draws, giving them 32 points and moving them level with ninth-place Portland in the standings.
That positioning is enormously important, as the two clubs are now tied on points for the final playoff spot in a tight Western Conference race.
Real Salt Lake, meanwhile, continue to struggle badly, with their own 13-game winless run in MLS action dating back to May 16 now matching Seattle’s recent poor form.
Salt Lake’s road record is particularly alarming, as they have gone 12 games without a win away from home across all competitions since March 7.
The contrast in fortunes on the night was stark, with Seattle clinical and purposeful while Real Salt Lake offered very little in the final third.
For Rusnák, scoring against his former employers will have carried a personal edge, and he delivered in emphatic fashion with a goal that combined skill, confidence, and precision.
The Sounders will hope this result signals a genuine turning point rather than a brief interruption to their inconsistent form as the playoff race intensifies.
