The personal launch monitor (PLM) category continues to be one of the most innovative in golf. New options come out all the time, so it’s often about picking the option that suits your needs the best.
You can chose between going with something more focused as a game to create a simulator or something more focused on being used on the range for practice and instruction.
Your use might also impact how much you’re willing to spend. If you’re just looking for something to make a game in your basement or give simple feedback on the range, then you might spend something in the $500-$700 range. Looking for more advanced data and accuracy that can keep up with the Trackmans and Quad Maxs of the world? Then you’re looking at spending somewhere between $3,000-$5,000.
With the Mevo Gen2, FlightScope is offering a unit that can give you the advanced data you might be looking for, the ability to use it as a simulator in a simple, portable form, for a price that slides in between those two categories. The Mevo Gen2 starts at just $1,299.
You’re paying more than an entry-level PLM, but you’re getting way more accurate data for a fraction of the price of the players in the higher-end category.
FlightScope has been in the launch monitor space for years and helped usher in the current age of personal launch monitors in 2017 when it introduced the original FlightScope Mevo.
Back then, having a launch monitor of any kind for $500 was unheard of, so the Mevo was truly unique.
The real performance upgrade came with the Mevo+, which added several key metrics, including angle of attack, spin axis and putting and chipping data. It also accommodated the pro package upgrade, allowing for club path, face angle, swing planes and face impact location.
Now the Mevo is getting an upgrade again and this time, it’s kept all the same features of the Mevo+, but the price dropped nearly in half from $2,200 to $1,299. Oh, and the battery life was doubled to six hours.
At a time when everything, especially golf equipment, seems to be getting more expensive, FlightScope delivered improved performance while managing to drop the price significantly.
I have a pretty good handle on what my launch and spin numbers should be with any particular club in my bag, so while I didn’t test the Mevo Gen2 head-to-head against another launch monitor, the numbers I got out of it were exactly what I expected them to be.
What was really useful is the preset for telling the device if you are using a premium golf ball or a range ball. I wasn’t aware of this feature at first, having used other more expensive launch monitors that didn’t have the option. So when I was saw launch numbers that I expected, but distances that seemed off, I looked into it.
Once I switched to range ball, my carry numbers seemed spot on.
I’ve also been super impressed with all the data I’ve been able to gather from it. There are loads of options to present different shots hit in practice mode and depending on what I’m working on, like face impact or swing path. Being able to see face impact — which requires the pro and face impact package — for less than $3,000 is incredibly valuable.
Given my job as someone who tests clubs for our launch coverage at GOLF, the Mevo Gen2 has become one of my most useful tools.
Lastly, the compact size of the Mevo Gen2 makes it just as easy to throw in my golf bag like a box of golf balls to travel with if I ever need.
For an extremely powerful yet affordable launch monitor, we’re grasping at staws for what could be better, but If I have to pick something, it’s the user interface.
You must connect to a device to record any session or see any of the data and at first, the FS Golf can seem kind of outdated and overwhelming. But it didn’t take long to become familiar with all the different view options, including a trajectory optimizer, similar to Trackman.

The Mevo Gen. 2 is a leaps-and-bounds improvement on the original and solid upgrade from the Mevo+ with the better battery life alone. The Mevo+ would often need to be charged after every session whereas the Gen2 allows me to use it multiple times before I need to charge again.
If you’re willing to go above the entry-level launch monitors priced around $500, you’re going to get outsized value from the Gen2 without needing to get yourself a professional grade unit.
