Aston Villa have been suggested to sign Sergio Ramos to solve their current crisis at the back.
Aston Villa have been in a sudden crisis in defence after only four games in the Premier League. The injuries to Pau Torres and then Ian Maatsen in the last outing, plus the minor injury to Matty Cash, potentially leave their backline with a big gap for the remaining players to fill, especially with the pressure of being winless despite their fine form in the Champions League.
With such circumstances, Villa have been given a solution by someone who knows the club and Villa’s boss very well, as reported by AS.com.
“The former Club Sport Director, Monchi (who knows the Camas native from his time at Sevilla FC) has suggested that Sergio Ramos could act as cover with Villa also involved in the UEFA Champions League.”
Sergio Ramos has been a free agent since his contract with his last club, Liga MX side Monterrey, was not extended. The 40-year-old defender has no offer yet and has even decided to hang up his boots. He has been attempting to keep his physical fitness at the top level independently.
The former Real Madrid, Sevilla and PSG man was on the verge of being involved with his former side as part of the consortium. He could easily be added to Villa’s squad in the Champions League to replace the injured Pau Torres or Ian Maatsen, especially should the club focus on looking for an experienced figure.
There has been no official confirmation from The Clarets and Blue about their decision on signing Sergio Ramos. He might be a great addition for Unai Emery’s side despite his age. His experience at the top level could be a great addition to the squad.
His last spell with Monterrey was quite impressive. He made 34 appearances and scored eight goals from 2024 to 2025. Ramos also helped the Mexican side reach the round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and bagged one goal when his team held Inter Milan to a 1-1 draw.
However, the 40-year-old defender has not played in a competitive game for 18 months. That was his last match with Monterrey. Moreover, Villa still have Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who has yet to make his debut. The former Southampton man needs to be given a chance immediately to gel with his new teammates. Another defender in the squad who should get a nod to play in the first team is youngster Modou Cisse.
Therefore, signing Ramos does not necessarily solve the crisis. In fact, it might block the chance for their new signing, Harwood-Bellis, to shine. Should Villa be keen on his services, they could offer him a short-term contract of 4-6 months with the option for an extension based on his performance.
