André Luiz And Taylor Calheira Lead Sporting Kansas City To Stunning 3-1 Victory Over LAFC

Sporting Kansas City produced one of the more surprising results of the MLS season on Saturday night, defeating Los Angeles FC 3-1 to snap a seven-match winless streak.

The result was a significant turnaround for Sporting KC, who entered the match having lost six of their previous seven games during a damaging run of poor form.

The winless streak had begun in particularly painful fashion, with LAFC handing Sporting KC a 4-0 defeat on the road earlier in the season.

That backdrop made Saturday’s performance all the more striking, as Sporting KC dominated the first half and took control of the match early.

André Luiz broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, finishing with the help of assists from defenders Justin Reynolds and Moisés Mosquera to mark his first MLS goal in just his third appearance in the league.

The goal was a milestone for several players involved, with Reynolds recording his second assist of the season and Mosquera notching his first in his seventh league appearance.

Sporting KC doubled their lead in the 31st minute when first-year forward Taylor Calheira scored unassisted, pushing the advantage to 2-0 heading into the break.

The goal was the third of the season for Calheira, who has now found the net in eight starts across 16 appearances since joining the squad this year.

LAFC gave themselves hope two minutes into the second half when Denis Bouanga scored his 13th goal of the season to make it 2-1 and set up a tense final period.

Sporting KC ultimately held on and added a third goal to seal the result, moving their record to 5-16-3 on the season while handing LAFC, sitting at 11-8-7, a rare and damaging home defeat.
