Christian Ramírez Scores Brace To Steer Austin FC Past Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1

Austin FC secured a vital road victory on Sunday, with Christian Ramírez scoring twice to defeat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 in an impressive away performance.

The result keeps Austin’s playoff hopes alive, as the club now sits just one point below the playoff bar with a record of seven wins, ten losses, and eight draws.

Vancouver, despite the defeat, remain top of the Western Conference standings with 46 points from their 24 matches this season, comfortably ahead of the chasing pack.

Ramírez opened the scoring in the 28th minute thanks to a brilliant run from Facundo Torres, who raced up the field and chipped a perfectly weighted ball into his teammate’s path.

The Austin forward wasted no time, hammering a right-footed shot into the bottom of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead on their very first shot of the match.

Vancouver had the chance to level before the interval when a penalty was awarded in the 39th minute after Besard Sabovic pulled Whitecaps captain Ryan Gauld down inside the area.

Gauld, the Scottish midfielder, stepped up to take the kick himself but saw his shot glance agonisingly off the crossbar, letting Austin escape with their lead intact.

Despite Vancouver controlling 57.7 per cent of possession and outperforming Austin by a margin of five shots to one across the first half, Austin went into the break leading 1-0.

Brian White brought the home side level in the 49th minute with his 15th MLS goal of the season, beating his defender and sending a low, rolling shot past goalkeeper Brad Stuver.

Ramírez then delivered the decisive blow in the 60th minute, collecting a pass from Rosales and blasting a powerful effort into the top of the Vancouver net to restore Austin’s advantage.

The goal, Ramírez’s second of the night, silenced the announced crowd of 23,855 and gave Austin the lead they would ultimately hold to claim the three points.

Brandon Vázquez had a chance to add a third in the 83rd minute, but his effort sailed over the Vancouver net as Austin tried to put the match beyond doubt.

The final moments brought further drama, as Austin defender Guilherme Biro was sent off after receiving his second yellow card in the 90th minute, leaving his side to see out the victory with ten men.

Austin’s two on-target shots compared to Vancouver’s six underlined the efficiency of Ramírez’s clinical finishing on a difficult night for the visitors at BC Place.

The result represents a significant boost for Austin’s playoff ambitions as the season enters its crucial final stages, with every point now carrying enormous weight.
