After spending eight years in Arsenal’s setup, goalkeeper Naomi Williams has completed a move to Watford as a free agent this summer.
Williams first joined Arsenal at the age of 13, making her departure from the club a particularly significant moment in her professional journey.
The goalkeeper confirmed her exit in May, later sharing an emotional message on Instagram reflecting on how much the club had shaped her development.
Her time at Arsenal coincided with one of the most successful periods in the women’s club’s history, making first-team opportunities extremely difficult to come by.
Arsenal reached the Champions League semi-finals last season and also won the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup, underlining the elite level of competition within the squad.
Williams found herself fourth in the goalkeeping pecking order at Arsenal, behind Daphne van Domselaar, Anneke Borbe, and Barbora Votikova during her time at the club.
Votikova had been at Arsenal on a short-term loan until the end of the season, further limiting the chances available to Williams throughout the campaign.
Amy Liddiard, Arsenal’s under-21 goalkeeper, was also part of the wider goalkeeping picture at the club at just 17 years of age.
Despite her long association with the club, Williams left without making a senior competitive appearance for Arsenal throughout her entire eight-year stint.
She did, however, feature in a friendly against an Australia All Stars XI in Sydney, giving her a taste of action at the senior level.
That appearance showed her capabilities, but consistent opportunities in a highly competitive squad simply never materialised during her time in north London.
Her move to Watford now represents a fresh start and a genuine opportunity to establish herself as a first-team goalkeeper at a competitive level.
After closing such a significant chapter in her career, Williams will be eager to make her mark and prove her worth in senior women’s football.
