Readers of this space may recall that I am a staunch proponent of carry-on luggage. I have come to believe, no matter the length of your trip, if it involves air travel, traveling with a carry-on is a non-negotiable. I managed to do it on a two-week international trip for the last two years, which helped me feel empowered to limit myself to a carry-on for every subsequent trip since, regardless of the destination.
That is, until I had a golf trip on the horizon. Uh oh. The trip was only three days, but the variety of outfits required — travel apparel, on- and off-course options, post-golf attire, and multiple pairs of shoes, of course — had me doubting myself. How could a carry-on provide all of the packing space I needed? The solution was obvious: I needed to bring clothes that work just as well on the course as they do off. But that strategy brought another problem to the surface: Multi-functional golf apparel that functions well on the course and looks suitable off it is notoriously hard to find — especially for women.
I’m happy to report, however, that these unicorn pieces of apparel do, in fact, exist! I was delighted to discover that TravisMathew’s women’s collection ticked every box. Wearing these pieces on my trip enabled me to feel great for all three days — and pack it all into a carry-on.
One thing that I’ve noticed about women’s apparel over the last several years is that the golf gear tends to look like exactly that: golf gear. My closet is full of those staples, but it’s not apparel that I would generally consider wearing out to dinner or drinks — especially on vacation.
I brought a total of four TravisMathew outfits on my trip: three to wear on the course, and one that I could play in but instead planned to change into after a round. The others were crossovers that could be worn all day. The refreshing thing about the TravisMathew pieces I brought is that they embody the athletic but athleisure-heavy vibe I like to have on the course while retaining silhouettes flattering and elevated enough for off-course wear.
Take, for example, the Moveknit Zip 2.0 Sleeveless dress. I’ve sung the praises of this dress before, but man! I want to shout even louder from the rooftops. It is SO flattering, so comfortable, and looks perfect for the course. It has a collar and it’s a great length — i.e., not too short. It’s absolutely a candidate for 19th-hole wear and with an assortment of colors and patterns available, you’d be hard-pressed to identify this dress as golf apparel. It’s a 10/10, no notes.
And TravisMathew’s other separates impressed me too. The skorts are stretchy, soft and comfortable. The tops are too, and the fabric used on both pieces is thick enough to have a smoothing effect in the midsection, rather than clinging to areas you’d prefer to stay tucked in.
The weather was warm on my trip, so the one layer I brought with me was the light-as-air Skyloft Light Quarter Zip. The sleeves stayed put when I scrunched them up, and I wore the top for the entirety of an early morning round that warmed to 85 humid degrees because it didn’t feel uncomfortably cloying. What a win!
One item that surprised me: the MoveKnit Rib Zip Sleeveless polo. I’ve seen this piece many times while scroll-shopping, and the cropped length immediately spoke to me (the word was NO). I’m a middle-aged mom, and I have no interest in wearing a “crop.” BUT … when this polo is paired with the drawstring-waist Opening Shot skort, which has a high-waisted fit, the outfit is actually … perfect! The top doesn’t ride up, and the skirt stays put, so the result is a beautiful outfit that feels youthful without unnecessary exposure. It functions exactly as it’s supposed to and is ideal for a casual vacay night on the town.
Ultimately, I was thrilled to identify TravisMathew as a new go-to brand for apparel that works just as hard on the course as it does off. New styles are being added all the time, and there’s a whole collection of cozy loungewear that I’m eager to dive into.
