Aston Villa begin their Champions League campaign next month, with the dates and kickoff times already confirmed.
After missing out last season, Villa is back in the European top tier club competition. It will be their fourth time competing in the Champions League. The Lions are aiming for a better campaign this season compared to their last appearances in UCL 2024/25, when Ollie Watkins and Co were knocked out in the quarterfinals to the eventual champions PSG.
With their revamped team, it remains to be seen if they could progress further than their last time out in 2024/25 or heading to the exit.
In the league phase, Aston Villa will be facing off against eight different teams from four different pots with four home and away games each. Here are their eight opponents in this preliminary round.
Matchday 1: vs Club Brugge (away) on September 8
The West Midlands side starts off their campaign on the road against the Belgian side. The match kicks off at 5.45 pm. This would be their fourth meetings between them. The previous three were also staged in the Champions League 2024/25 with two wins for Villa and one loss. Interestingly, The Lions’ defeat also took place at the league phase in Jay Bredel stadium, the same venue as this clash.
Matchday 2: vs Fenerbahce (home) on October 14
Their next opponent is the Turkish giant, Fenerbahce. The match kicks off at 8 pm at their own home turf. This is their fourth meetings in the continental competition. Their first two meetings were in the first round of the UEFA Cup 1977/78. Andy Grey and Co. did not have difficulty in securing a 6-0 win on aggregate. Then, their last encounter was last season in the Europa League league phase on the road. Villa also picked up a narrow 1-0 win.
Matchday 3: vs Viking Stavanger (home) on October 21.
The next game is still at home against the Norwegian Viking Stavanger. The match kicks off at 8 pm. The fixture will be their maiden meeting in Europe.
Matchday 4: vs Barcelona (away) on November 3
The series of tough games begins here, the visit to Camp Nou. The game kicks off at 8 pm. It will be their fifth encounters. Villa’s record against Blaugrana is only one win, one draw and two losses. Yet, all of them took place before 1990s. Their first two meetings were in the quarterfinals of UEFA Cup 1978 when Barcelona still had Johan Cryuff in the squad. He even scored one of the goals. The next two was in UEFA Super Cup 1983, in which Villa managed to win on extra time in the second leg. They beat the Catalan side 3-1 on aggregate.
Matchday 5: vs Galatasaray (away) on November 24
The next game is a trip to Istanbul again but this time will be their first outing against Cim Bom. The match kicks off at 5.45 pm.
Matchday 6: vs PSG (home) on December 8
Apart from Barcelona game, this is definitely the most anticipated one by the fans. It is high time for their revenge after their defeat in UEFA Super Cup earlier this month. It will be their fourth meetings with one win and two losses. Their only win was a near comeback victory one in the 2024/25 UCL quarterfinal. John McGinn and Co were only able to snatch 3-2 win after 3-1 defeat in Paris. The match kicks off at 8 pm.
Matchday 7: vs Borussia Dortmund (home) on January 19
The next game, which kicks off at 8 pm, is their first meeting in the official competition. The match against Dortmund is always tricky. They both did have one clash but in a friendly game two years ago. The 1997 UCL champion won 2-0 in their home turf.
Matchday 8: vs Slavia Prague (away) on January 27
The last game of the league phase will be concluded in Prague against the Czech giant. This is another maiden encounter for both teams, which kicks off at 8 pm.
