Aston Villa have been considering signing the defender from the Championship side who is frozen out by his own team at the moment.
Aston Villa transfer business might be getting ahead of deadline day. They have managed to secure Nicolas Jackson as Ollie Watkins’ replacement plus soon probably Rafael Leao or perhaps Jack Grealish too to bolster their attacking side.
However, when it comes to securing Ezri Konsa’s successor, Villa have found the roadblock in the process. They have yet to snatch any name to strengthen their backline. Their expected target, Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez, is still injured and Villa did not strike the deal yet. In fact, Crystal Palace hijacked them and secured his signature. Their ongoing talks with Taylor Harwood-Bellis’s camp has not made significant progress too as Southampton are still demanding their asking price to be matched.
According to the report in the Athletic via Yahoo Sports, Villa are eyeing for a shocking alternative. The player who is currently not even in his team’s squad.
“Aston Villa are in serious discussions to sign Jean-Clair Todibo from West Ham United.”
Todibo joined The Hammers in summer 2025 and is currently still tied up to his contract till 2029. However, he has not been part of Nuno Santo’s squad in the first two games of the Championship matches.
It is believed that he had been frozen out of the squad due to falling out with the manager. The French international is also looking for a new club this summer rather than playing in the second tier competition.
His conflict with Nuno Santo has already been going on since the end of last season. Ahead of the decisive final match against Leeds United, the former Barcelona man refused to play for his team.
The Hammers are likely to ask for £ 22-25 million from any potential suitors for Todibo. The Lions are expecting to match their demand, unless they come up with an initial loan deal first, just like what they did on Wan Bissaka.
The center back who once played for Schalke 04, and Benfica too only featured in 25 games in all competitions with only making one assist. During his time with The Hammers, he couldn’t help them finish even at the midtable. They were already in the relegation zone in the 2024/25 campaign before eventually failing to the second tier.
Based on the data in FotMob, Todibo’s form last season was somehow not convincing. His top speed in running might be fine, about 35.3 km/h, with his successful passes rate 87.3 % and 60 % for winning duels. However, his accurate long ball was only 38.5 %.
His defensive work was probably the most unsatisfactory. The ex-Barcelona man only made 166 defensive contributions in total, that included 38 tackles only, 17 interceptions and 98 clearance, quite low for a defender.
Aston Villa seems so desperate to find Konsa’s replacement soon if they only consider signing him. Villa should explore the names in the free agent market who still have better players available than the 28-year old centre back.
