Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has warned the Premier League that he wants the club to continue spending heavily this transfer window.

The Italian coach made his ambitions clear at a press conference ahead of Spurs’ EFL Cup tie against Charlton Athletic.

Tottenham confirmed the signing of Brazilian winger Savio in a deal worth £75 million up front, with a further £10 million in potential add-ons.

The 22-year-old, known as Savinho during his time at Manchester City, had made it clear early in the summer that he wanted to move to north London.

The signing pushes Tottenham’s total summer spending to £319 million across four signings, with the club also pursuing City’s Omar Marmoush.

De Zerbi spoke glowingly about Savio’s qualities, saying: “In terms of one vs one he’s one of the best players, he can play left or right. I’ve known him for a long time, before he went to City. He’s a big player for us.”

The Spurs boss believes the winger has arrived at a defining moment in his career and must now step up to lead the attack.

“In a football career, you arrive one day [at a point where] you have to show if you are good enough, and for him, he’s arrived at that moment and we are here to help him, hug him, give all the instruction, all the information he needs,” De Zerbi said.

Drawing on his own playing experience, De Zerbi expressed confidence that Savio could develop into a world-class talent under his guidance at Spurs.

“I was a player, I played in the same position as Savio. We have to be good, so good, to complete his qualities, because if we can, we find a top, top player,” he added.

However, De Zerbi has challenged Savio to significantly improve his goal output if he is to be considered among the elite wingers in world football.

“For sure he has to achieve, so good in 1v1 and in creating scoring chances. To be complete he has to score. If you analyse other best wingers in the world, many of them score 10 or 15 per season,” De Zerbi said.

The need for attacking reinforcements became painfully obvious when Spurs suffered a 3-0 defeat away at Brentford on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Starting with Mathys Tel and 19-year-old Mikey Moore on the wing, Tottenham lacked directness and inventiveness in wide areas throughout that chastening defeat.

De Zerbi made clear that the responsibility to improve does not rest with Savio alone, stating: “He must become one of the key players. The improvement is to become better, take more responsibility. Not just Savio, but also the other players.”
