Fagioli’s Fiorentina Future Clouded as Premier League Interest Grows

Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace have both registered interest in Nicolo Fagioli, with the former Juventus midfielder’s future at Fiorentina now uncertain.

Sportmediaset’s Orazio Accomando reports that attention around the Italian is growing, with both Premier League clubs keen. Napoli have also been mentioned as a potential late entrant into the race for his signature.

Fagioli left Juventus for Fiorentina initially on loan before the move was made permanent last summer, and his form in Florence over the past 18 months has been a genuine bright spot amid La Viola’s broader struggles. His leadership and technical range in central midfield have stood out even as the team around him has toiled, and it is that growth that has now put him firmly on the radar of two Premier League sides looking to strengthen through the middle of the park.

Torreira lined up as potential replacement

Fiorentina appear alive to the risk of losing him. Wednesday’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport reports that the arrival of Christ Oulai in Florence has raised doubts over Fagioli’s long-term role, with the club having identified former player Lucas Torreira as a possible replacement should a sale materialise. Corriere Fiorentino carries similar reporting, and notably the two midfielders have not featured together during pre-season, which could be read as a signal of things to come.

This is not the first time Fagioli has been linked with a switch to England; Fiorentina were previously wary of losing him to Newcastle United after the Magpies lost Sandro Tonali, though that move never came to fruition.

A player on the rise

At 25, Fagioli can operate across various midfield positions, and his technical quality was evident even during his time at Juventus, where he featured in the Champions League. That ability translated onto the international stage too, with a call-up to Italy’s squad at the 2024 European Championships underlining how far his stock has risen. Either Forest or Palace would be adding a proven, versatile operator in the middle of the park, and with Napoli also said to be watching, this situation could move quickly once the transfer window enters its closing stages.
