Arsenal have agreed a £51 million deal to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, ending a protracted transfer saga that dominated much of the summer window.
The Premier League champions moved for the England international after it became clear that William Saliba would face several months on the sidelines with a back injury.
Jurrien Timber is also sidelined with a long-term groin problem, leaving Arsenal dangerously short of options in the heart of their defence.
Villa had initially valued Konsa at £60 million, a figure Arsenal were unwilling to meet, but the two clubs eventually found a compromise to push the deal through.
The 28-year-old has agreed personal terms with Arsenal, and the transfer is expected to move quickly to a conclusion in the coming days.
Arsenal had also looked into a potential move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah before ultimately deciding to pursue Konsa, his England teammate.
Both players share a similar profile, offering versatility across centre-back and right-back positions, but Arsenal settled on the more experienced Premier League option.
Konsa is a Londoner by birth, having come through the academy at Charlton Athletic and making his senior debut in 2016 before joining Brentford and then Aston Villa.
He has gone on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders under Dean Smith, Steven Gerrard, and most recently Unai Emery at Villa Park.
If Konsa is not available for Arsenal’s opening weekend fixture, he could make his debut against his former club at Aston Villa on August 31, live on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
Villa are already planning for life without their star defender, with interest reported in Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo as a potential replacement.
Chelsea are now ready to listen to offers for Tosin, who has also attracted interest from Marseille, Benfica, and Sevilla as clubs circle the defender.
Arsenal’s move for Konsa underlines how seriously the club is taking their defensive injury crisis, acting decisively to protect their Premier League title ambitions.
