Arsenal have agreed a £51 million deal to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, bringing the England international to the Premier League champions this summer.
The move comes at a critical time for Arsenal, who are dealing with significant defensive absentees heading into the new season.
William Saliba is sidelined for an extended period, while Jurrien Timber is also out with a long-term groin problem, leaving the squad short of options at the back.
Arsenal had explored a potential move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah before ultimately deciding to pursue Konsa instead.
Both Quansah and Konsa share a similar profile, with each capable of playing at centre-back and right-back, giving Arsenal versatility across their defensive line.
Aston Villa initially held firm at a £60 million asking price, with Arsenal hoping to pay considerably less, but the two clubs found a compromise on Thursday to finalise the transfer.
Konsa, who is 28 years old, had two years remaining on his contract at Villa Park before agreeing to make the move to north London.
The defender was notably absent from Unai Emery’s squad for Villa’s UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain last week, signalling that the transfer was progressing.
Konsa had a standout statistical season in the Premier League, winning more duels on the ground than any other player, finishing well ahead of Virgil van Dijk and Gabriel in that category.
If Konsa is not immediately match-ready, he could make his Premier League debut in a high-profile fixture against his former club Aston Villa, which is scheduled for Monday Night Football on August 31.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa are already working on defensive reinforcements, with the club showing interest in Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo as a potential replacement for Konsa.
Chelsea are now willing to listen to offers for Tosin, who has attracted attention from Marseille, Benfica, and Sevilla in addition to Villa’s reported interest.
The situation means both Konsa and potentially Tosin could find themselves making debuts in the same high-stakes Premier League clash between these two clubs later this month.
