Aston Villa make a surprisingly swift move to hijack PSG’s summer target despite still having Emiliano Martinez.
Aston Villa’s transfer plans previously did not include signing a new goalkeeper, as Emiliano Martinez’s proposed move to Juventus had stalled because of the two clubs’ differing valuations. The Villans appeared content with the Argentine remaining at Villa Park, while Marco Bizot was considered a reliable deputy.
However, developments over the past two days have suddenly pushed Unai Emery’s side back into the race for PSG target Zion Suzuki.
The Japanese international has been on Villa’s radar for some time, although they had yet to submit a formal offer. In fact, Suzuki was already in talks with the French champions, and the move appeared to be progressing after both personal terms and the transfer fee had reportedly been agreed.
Yet, the deal unexpectedly collapsed despite the initial agreement. It is believed that negotiations broke down because of a dispute involving the player’s representatives, who were reportedly dissatisfied with the commission involved in the transfer.
Villa have now entered negotiations with Suzuki’s camp, according to Fabrizio Romano on his X account.
“Villa are prepared to match PSG’s £26m-plus proposal, and negotiations are now under way.”
The obvious question is why Villa are pursuing Suzuki again despite still having Martinez in the squad.
During pre-season, Marco Bizot was given the opportunity to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper. He featured prominently in friendlies against several top European sides, including the UEFA Super Cup last week while Martinez was still enjoying an extended break following his international commitments.
Unfortunately, the Dutch goalkeeper’s performances were rather underwhelming. He failed to keep a clean sheet throughout pre-season and committed a costly error against PSG, despite making four saves during the match.
The former Brest goalkeeper may not have done enough to convince Emery that he can be trusted in high-pressure Champions League fixtures. Bizot might be a dependable option in the Europa League, but the demands of the Champions League are considerably different.
Suzuki is therefore viewed as a more suitable deputy to Martinez. Alternatively, Villa could eventually decide to sacrifice their current number one by reopening discussions with Juventus, who may revive their previous interest.
Villa’s renewed interest in Suzuki could be linked to Emery‘s long-term strategy.
The club reportedly views the Parma goalkeeper as the ideal successor to Martinez. His performances at the FIFA World Cup have only strengthened that belief after he recorded 12 saves during the tournament.
He is also comfortable playing with the ball at his feet and remains composed when facing pressure from opposing forwards, qualities that fit Emery’s tactical approach.
If Villa succeed in signing him this summer, several possibilities could emerge. The club could decide to loan him to another side where he would receive regular first-team football, or they could keep him at Villa Park and allow him to develop under Martinez’s guidance.
Such an arrangement would give Suzuki the opportunity to learn directly from one of the world’s best goalkeepers while waiting for his chance to become Villa’s first choice, particularly if Martinez decides to leave in the near future.
Another possible scenario would be adopting a two-goalkeeper policy.
Under such a system, both Martinez and Suzuki would share responsibilities throughout the campaign. Martinez could remain the preferred option in the Champions League and selected Premier League fixtures, while Suzuki may feature in domestic cup competitions and rotate into league matches.
Such an approach is uncommon in English football, but it could help Villa manage a demanding schedule while also preparing for life after Martinez.
Whether Emery is planning for the future or simply strengthening an important position, one thing is clear: Villa’s sudden return to the race for Suzuki suggests that the goalkeeping situation at Villa Park may not be as settled as many initially believed.
