St. Louis City SC continued their impressive run of form with a convincing 3-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.
Simon Becher was the star of the show, scoring twice to help his side claim all three points on the road against a struggling San Jose side.
Daniel Edelman also got in on the act, opening the scoring early to set the tone for a dominant St. Louis display.
The win extends St. Louis City’s unbeaten streak to nine games, a remarkable run that stretches back several months and underlines their growing consistency.
Edelman struck first, roaming unmarked through the middle of the pitch before Conrad Wallem slipped a precise pass into a point-blank position just eight minutes in.
San Jose goalkeeper Angus Gunn had little chance to keep out the opener, with the goal coming as a direct result of some sharp, incisive passing from the visitors.
Becher then made it 2-0 in the 27th minute with a superb header, rising brilliantly to meet Eduard Lowen’s perfectly delivered corner kick right in the middle of the box.
Gunn was again left helpless as the ball flew past him, with St. Louis producing the kind of slick, well-constructed play that has defined their recent form.
San Jose gave themselves hope early in the second half when Leroux gathered a clearing attempt from a free kick just outside the box and fired a one-hop shot past Roman Burki at the left post in the 47th minute.
The Earthquakes briefly threatened to make a game of it, but another defensive lapse allowed St. Louis to restore their two-goal cushion and seal the three points.
Becher completed his brace to put the result beyond doubt, capping a night that showcased everything St. Louis have been doing well during their unbeaten run.
The San Jose defense was repeatedly exposed throughout the evening, struggling to cope with the movement and passing combinations that St. Louis executed with confidence and precision.
For St. Louis City, nine games without defeat is a statement of genuine intent as the season continues to develop in their favour.
