Aston Villa boss hints at ‘adding more followers’ as the goal in winning UEFA Super Cup

Aston Villa boss appears to aim higher goal in winning UEFA Super Cup this year instead of just delivering another trophy.

Aston Villa are flying to Salzburg to face off PSG in the UEFA Super Cup clash on Wednesday. This is literally the first official game of the 2026/27 season.

For PSG, this game is perhaps just another encounter at the beginning of the season for another silverware after winning the same last season against Tottenham Hotspur on penalties before heading to Champions League.

However, for Aston Villa, especially Emery, this game is more than that. A win would not be just collecting another trophy, but the Spaniard aims something more, as a start to put Villa on the global map of football. Their Asian Tour is another step to support it.

Emery shared this view to the press as reported in the club’s official site, avfc.co.uk.

“If we are being successful, it’s because we are getting a good development in everything – about the club, about the players – and through it as well, we can add more followers or get more brand in the world of football.”

The importance of PSG clash

Aston Villa boss is aware how important it is to win the game and add a trophy to their collection in this rare chance, beside that global brand goal. It is not every year The Lions get this opportunity to face the UCL champion. He added his comments on that

“To play (in the) Super Cup is another opportunity to be there – the opportunity to win a trophy, to play against PSG, the better team now in the world than other teams we can compare with them.

“How we are going to play, enjoying the moment we will have with our supporters for this Super Cup, is something for our history and future of this club. It’s really fantastic, because we are in the top positions when we are having matches like we are going to play.

“Of course, PSG is a huge test, because normally they will have the opportunity as a favourite to win this trophy, but how we are collectively as a club – individually, even myself competing with Luis Enrique – is something that makes us so proud of how we are in the football world now.”

Emery seems to be aware of his negative record in this duel before and his meetings with Luis Enrique’s side. In the Super Cup, this would be his second encounter after 2015. At that time, Emery led Sevilla to win their second Europa League in a row while Enrique just guided Barcelona to win the treble in the same season. Enrique’s team with MSN trio won 5-4 in a goal galore game.

The previous encounters

This clash will be the third for both sides. Villa and PSG previously locked horns in the quarterfinals of Champions League 2024/25. Villa was close enough to make a comeback victory to see off the Ligue 1 giant, should they have not squandered several chances.

In the first leg, they were beaten 3-1 while in the reverse fixture, Villa could only pick up a 3-2 win over Le Parisien. However, Emery sees the difference in this upcoming game and those previous marches.

“Different moment, even different players. A few years between one team and another team, but a lot of changes. How we can identify our power with PSG comparing with the two matches we played – as well, two very different matches (to each other).

“In Paris, we lost 3-1 and we played a good match, but not being protagonists like the second match.

“The second leg, we were exploiting more our potential in attack, having a really good moment to come back the result during the second half, really being protagonists and dominating against the best team.

“At the end, we didn’t achieve it. But overall, we could feel playing against PSG, one team like that, we could achieve the level they had. Our players as well, I think for our belief, it was very important the way we played.”
