Aston Villa man has shared his view on their pre-season matches before playing in UEFA Super Cup next week.
Aston Villa have just completed their pre-season last night. Unfortunately, they ended their Asian tour with a negative result, a 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich. It is their third loss in their six pre-season games.
Interestingly, they were all beaten by the top teams in Europe, FC Porto, Sociedad and Bayern. Unai Emery’s men only managed to pick up three wins over the mediocre sides, Walsall, Indonesian All Stars and BG Pathum Thani. Such may seem to be concerning, especially their last defeat, considering Villa are going to play in the UEFA Champions League.
Nevertheless, Pau Torres would disagree on that. The Spanish defender shared his opinion to the press as reported by the official club site, avfc.co.uk
“It was a really good game, a really good test for us to prepare for the final next week,”
The game against Die Roten yesterday delivered the necessary test for Villa, who will be taking on PSG in Salzburg on August 12 in the UEFA Super Cup. The game was tight and Emery’s men had to hold on under pressure before leveling their opposition’s fine form.
The Lions eventually conceded through Kim Min Jae and Luis Diaz before their new signing, Joao Gomes, reduced their deficit on 83rd minutes. Villa should have found the equalizer if Manuel Neuer had failed to deny Tammy Abraham‘s attempt.
Pau Torres added his comments on the final game in their Asia tour.
“I think we played well against a really good team. The first half was more or less equal; they scored with a set piece and we need to improve that part, correct things. We have now a couple of days to prepare for the final, but I think we need to play like today.
“It’s always good to play against one team like them; it’s always good to play during the pre-season to test ourselves and to know, more or less, in which level we are.
“I think we competed really well today, and this is the work that we need to do in the rest of the season.”
The former Villarreal man also shared his view on the Asian Tour this summer. He gave positive insight on this tour to Indonesia, Thailand and Hong Kong, despite the weather and ticketing issue. The team had a chance to see their fans in each country, experience different cultures and so on.
“We had a really good welcome in each country. We felt all the support from the fans in Asia, and we are happy to be here after three years in a row, in the USA, now here in Asia.
“We are happy to be here, to know different countries, different cultures, and for us it’s been good.”
Once they return, Emi Buendia and Co would be preparing for the UEFA Super Cup match versus Champions League winner, PSG. It will be their second ever one after the 1982 edition. They were able to see off Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate. Villa hope they could lift the trophy again this year, despite Emery’s negative record in this clash.
