Inter Miami defeated Atlético de San Luis 4-2 in the Leagues Cup on Wednesday, August 5, with Lionel Messi stealing the show throughout the contest.

The Argentine superstar scored twice in the first half at Nu Stadium in Miami, setting a new all-time goals record for the Leagues Cup competition.

Messi’s first goal arrived in the 11th minute, levelling the match after the Liga MX side had taken an early lead at Nu Stadium.

Noah Allen delivered a pass from the left side of the pitch, and Messi received it in front of the net before striking the ball cleanly forward for the equalizer.

After scoring, the 39-year-old tucked the ball under his arm and high-fived his teammates while grinning widely, a moment that captured the joy of his return to form.

Telasco Segovia then added to Inter Miami’s tally, putting the home side up 2-1 with a goal of his own to extend the advantage further.

Messi struck again in the 44th minute when Allen once again sent a pass from the left of the pitch, this time finding the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner near the middle of the net.

Rather than shooting immediately, Messi dribbled forward a few steps before finding the back of the net, completing a brace that secured his place in Leagues Cup history.

The performance came in Messi’s second game back for the club since taking a break following Argentina’s run to the final of the FIFA World Cup.

During Messi’s absence, Luis Suárez had helped steady the ship for Miami, though the Uruguayan was unavailable against San Luis as he began serving the first match of a six-game ban for spitting.

Inter Miami will look to build on this impressive victory when they face Monterrey in their next Leagues Cup fixture on Saturday.
