Aston Villa boss has been tipped unhappy with how the club transfer plan turned out, especially with the number of departures.
Aston Villa have been going through a tough summer with the departure of their key men within a few weeks last month. Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers have left quite all the sudden alongside the expected ones such as Andres Garcia, Lewis Dobbin. Lucas Digne is set to leave as well plus the potential exit of Ezri Konsa, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins.
Yet, perhaps the most shocking one was the departure of Unai Emery’s own staff, the set piece specialist, Austin MacPhee. The Scotsman’s release clause was triggered by Chelsea.
Villa have managed to snatch several names such as Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Alejandro Garnacho as the replacement so far. However, they are still considered doubtful to make an instant impact in B6. Such might lead to another struggling start this season, something they experienced last season with six winless runs in all competitions at the beginning of the campaign.
Their Spanish boss once again has to deal with such turbulent times after ending the 30-year title drought. According to Mike Brown, the former Aston Villa scout, Emery is likely to be discontent with how the club undergoes the transfer plan, as reported by Caughtoffside.
“Unai Emery is reportedly unhappy with the club’s transfer business after a series of high-profile departures this summer.”
The Spanish manager initially was hoping to keep the squad together. His ideal plan was to prevent their key players being released and add some players in the squad to provide the balanced quality when he rotates the squad.
He even was believed to be reportedly inquiring with Morgan Rogers to stay one more season as they have Champions League this season. Villa was even ready to keep him in the squad before Chelsea eventually agreed to meet the club’s demand.
Villa’s attempt to sign more top players so far have yet to materialise. Their offer for Palmeiras’s Allan Elias has been rejected, their talks to secure Pervis Estupinan has been stalled, and their approach for signing Joao Palinha and Nicolas Jackson has not made any significant progress. If this goes on till the end of this month, Villa would be forced to snatch any remaining available targets who have been priced out or the free agent ones.
Emery might be frustrated but he has dealt with the same situation before. The former Villareal, PSG and Arsenal boss experienced the circumstance to preserve the team’s quality despite the major sales.
During his spells in Valencia, and Sevilla, his squad suffered the same circumstance. With Los Ches in 2010/11 for example, he lost David Villa and David Silva who were the key men in their campaign to qualify to the Champions League. Yet, Emery was able to guide them finish in the top four.
Then, in Sevilla, he faced the same issue, losing Ivan Rakitic and Alberto Moreno in the 2014/15 season. His team still managed to defend the Europa League. The only time he could keep his winning squad as planned after delivering a silverware was in Villareal in the 2021/22 season. Emery could eventually lead them to the UCL semifinal.
