Former PGA Tour winner Trey Mullinax was hit with a six-month PGA Tour suspension on Wednesday for violating the Tour’s Anti-Doping Policy.
Mullinax, who has one PGA Tour win and two Korn Ferry Tour wins over his career, tested positive for a banned substance, for which he took full responsibility but denied trying to gain a “competitive advantage” in a statement on Wednesday.
The PGA Tour released a concurrent statement that failed to provide many details.
Here’s what we do know.
Late afternoon on Wednesday, the Tour released its statement about Mullinax, in which they said Mullinax had violated the Tour’s ban on “performance-enhancing substances” by testing positive for a prohibited substance.
“The PGA Tour announced Wednesday that Trey Mullinax has violated the PGA Tour Anti-Doping Policy’s ban on the use of performance-enhancing substances for testing positive for a substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA),” the Tour’s statement began.
It continued by declaring Mullinax would receive a six-month suspension from PGA Tour-sanctioned events as a result of his violation and would be “eligible to return on Jan. 16, 2027.”
But while the Tour stated that Mullinax had tested positive for a prohibited substance, it did not reveal what that substance was.
The Tour did, however, say Mullinax had “cooperated fully” and “accepted his suspension.”
In his own statement, Mullinax, who won the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship in 2022, admitted it was his responsibility “to understand and follow the PGA Tour’s Anti-Doping Policy,” and that he “failed to do so.”
“To my fans, I want to address the news regarding my failed anti-doping test and the suspension that followed. I take full responsibility for what happened,” Mullinax’s statement read. “At the end of the day, it is my responsibility to understand and follow the PGA Tour’s Anti-Doping Policy and all of its rules and regulations. I failed to do that, and that is on me.”
The pro also provided a few more details on the situation, suggesting the failed test was a result of his use of medication he did not know was banned by the Tour. However, he did not name the medication in question.
“I recently used a medication to treat a condition I was originally diagnosed with in college without seeking approval under the Tour’s Anti-Doping Policy,” Mullinax said.
He went on to argue that his violation was a result of ignorance, not an attempt to gain “a competitive advantage” in his career.
“My lack of knowledge is not an excuse. It was my responsibility to know the rules before taking any medication and I failed to do so,” Mullinax said. “I want to be absolutely clear – I have never taken any substance with the intention of gaining a competitive advantage. Anyone who knows me knows how much I respect this game and the values it represents.”
His statement continued: “I accept the consequences of my actions and will use this experience as a lesson. Golf has given me so much, and I never want one mistake to define the respect I have for the game or for the people who support me. Thank you to everyone who has supported me, and I look forward to competing again in 2027.”
The last PGA Tour player known to have violated the Tour’s Anti-Doping Policy was Byeong Hun An in 2023. An failed a test after using an over-the-counter cough syrup that included a banned substance.
Mullinax made 23 starts on the PGA Tour in 2025, finishing 150th in the FedEx Fall standings to receive conditional status for 2026. This season, he’s only played in two PGA Tour events, missing the cut at the Texas Children’s Houston Open and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
