Manchester City have identified Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal as their standout candidate to succeed Rodri in the long term.

The Premier League club have been closely monitoring the 19-year-old as they plan for a future without their talismanic Spanish midfielder.

Rodri’s role in City’s midfield has been central to their success, with his control, positioning and tactical intelligence making him almost irreplaceable.

Bernal has emerged as the player they believe could eventually fill that void, with sources close to the agents industry informing CaughtOffside of City’s serious interest.

His physical presence, composure in possession and ability to receive the ball under pressure make him an ideal fit for the system Enzo Maresca operates.

City are not alone in their admiration, with Chelsea and Arsenal also monitoring Bernal’s development at Camp Nou, underlining the enormous regard in which he is held.

However, Barcelona have gone to extraordinary lengths to protect one of their most prized academy graduates, tying him down to a contract running until 2029.

The Spanish club have also inserted a €500 million release clause, giving them complete control over any potential transfer and making a deal virtually impossible in the near term.

Bernal himself has shown no desire to leave Barcelona, with the teenager appearing emotionally committed to establishing himself as a major first-team figure under Hansi Flick.

Manchester United’s attempts to include Bernal in discussions over Marcus Rashford’s future were immediately rejected by Barcelona, and the player himself showed no interest whatsoever in departing.

That firm rejection from both club and player should serve as a significant warning to City, Arsenal and Chelsea that Bernal is not simply waiting for a lucrative Premier League offer.

Barcelona have reportedly provided the midfielder with assurances that he features prominently in Flick’s plans, further reducing any incentive to consider a move away.

City’s interest at this stage therefore appears to be more about long-term succession planning than any genuine expectation of completing a transfer in the immediate future.

Pursuing Bernal aggressively right now would likely waste time and create unrealistic expectations given Barcelona’s immovable stance on the matter.

City may well need to identify a more attainable midfield target in the shorter term while keeping Bernal firmly on their long-term shortlist.
