The trouble had its roots on the pitch during the closing moments of the Crew’s 2-1 victory over Cincinnati, which set the tone for what followed in the tunnel.
Cincinnati midfielder Gerardo Valenzuela was at the centre of the on-field flashpoint, attempting an aggressive challenge on Crew forward Taha Habroune late in the game.
Valenzuela chopped at Habroune’s leg, sending him tumbling to the ground in a moment that visibly angered the Crew players and ignited the subsequent tunnel confrontation.
One party involved in the incident addressed the situation directly, speaking to the Columbus Dispatch to offer their account of what unfolded after the full-time whistle.
“In the tunnel, nothing really happened,” the source told the publication. “It’s not the image that we want to show to young kids who watch us, but at the end of the day we try to protect our players from some vicious play like that, some dangerous plays.”
Crew head coach Laurent Courtois also weighed in, offering his own straightforward assessment of how the situation deteriorated so quickly after the final whistle.
Courtois told the Columbus Dispatch that “something stupid happened and then guys got a little bit heated” when describing the whole incident between the two clubs.
