Former recruitment expert Mick Brown has revealed that Jarrod Bowen’s decision to stay at West Ham comes with significant conditions attached to the club’s promotion push.
Although Bowen signed a revised contract following the Hammers’ relegation, an agreement reportedly exists that could hand him a route back to Premier League football should West Ham fall short.
Brown, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, outlined how the winger’s long-term future at London Stadium is firmly tied to the club’s Championship performance this season.
“Bowen has agreed to stay at West Ham with a plan to be in the Premier League again next season,” Brown explained, making clear the arrangement is performance-dependent rather than unconditional.
Brown also warned that outside interest in the England international will not simply disappear during the club’s time in the second tier of English football.
“Come the end of the season, if they’re falling behind or look like they’re going to miss out, the speculation surrounding him is going to come back up again,” he said.
Brown added that rival clubs will be monitoring developments closely, stating “interest from these clubs isn’t going to go away, they’re going to be keeping a close eye on the situation at West Ham.”
The former scout was also keen to stress that automatic promotion is far from guaranteed, pointing to numerous clubs across football history who have struggled to bounce straight back up after relegation.
“It’s not a foregone conclusion that they will go straight back up… many clubs have gone down, planned to bounce back up, and failed,” Brown cautioned.
He went further, suggesting a formal understanding may already be in place between player and club regarding his future should the promotion target be missed.
“I expect Bowen has an agreement with the club that if they miss out on their goals of promotion, he will be allowed to consider his options,” Brown said.
Bowen, who captains West Ham, had already attracted strong transfer interest from Liverpool during the summer window before ultimately committing to the club with a new deal.
The 28-year-old remains one of the most recognisable players to have dropped into the Championship, having scored the winning goal in the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League final.
His consistent performances for the Hammers in recent seasons have cemented his status as one of the most coveted wingers outside the Premier League right now.
With his England ambitions also a factor, an extended stay in the second division could complicate his hopes of maintaining a regular international presence.
For the time being, Bowen’s focus appears squarely on firing West Ham back into the top flight, but the clock is ticking on an agreement that could reshape his entire career trajectory.
