Emmanuel Latte Lath’s troubled spell at Atlanta United appears to be drawing to a close after just a season and a half with the club.

The Ivorian striker was notably absent from Atlanta’s 2-2 draw at Charlotte FC on Wednesday, July 22, raising immediate questions about his future.

Technical director Chris Henderson addressed the situation before the match, speaking to 92.9 FM and offering a carefully worded admission about ongoing discussions.

“We’re having a few conversations around him, and so out of precaution we’ve kept him out of this game,” Henderson said, adding: “That’s about the extent of what I’m going to say about it at the moment.”

Atlanta United paid a reported $22 million fee to sign Latte Lath from Middlesbrough in February 2025, which was a league record at the time of the deal.

That fee remains MLS’s second-highest incoming transfer, with only Son Heung-min’s move to LAFC costing more than the sum paid for Latte Lath.

The striker arrived with considerable momentum, having scored 11 goals for Middlesbrough in the first half of the Championship campaign before making the switch to MLS.

He continued that strong form early on, netting five goals in his first six Atlanta appearances, but his output dried up dramatically in the months that followed.

Latte Lath managed just three goals and three assists in his next 39 appearances, finishing with a total of nine goals and three assists across 44 MLS matches.

Atlanta failed to qualify for last season’s MLS Playoffs and entered the midseason World Cup break sitting second bottom of the Eastern Conference, compounding the pressure on the squad.

According to The Athletic, Atlanta United is exploring moves for two forwards who featured at the 2026 World Cup, specifically Uruguay’s Darwin Núñez and Switzerland’s Breel Embolo.

Should Latte Lath depart, Atlanta would have an open Designated Player spot available that could be used to pursue one of those high-profile targets.

Burnley, relegated from the Premier League last season, has reportedly entered the picture as a potential destination for the 27-year-old striker.

Longtime UK football writer Alan Nixon has reported that Burnley submitted a loan bid for Latte Lath, with an obligation to buy included should the club earn promotion to the Premier League in 2026-27.

The move would represent a significant shift for a player once considered the jewel of MLS recruitment, now potentially heading back to the Championship after a disappointing American adventure.
