Aston Villa have signed only a few players who impressed at the FIFA World Cup throughout the tournament’s history.
This summer seems to be a busy one for Aston Villa. Having lost Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, and Lucas Digne after their fine performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, they made a quick move by signing one of the tournament’s rising stars, Johan Manzambi.
The Switzerland international was already on the rise after helping Freiburg reach the Europa League final in May. Yet, in North America, the 20-year-old versatile midfielder continued his fine form before suffering an injury in the Round of 32 against Algeria. He managed to register three goals and two assists in just four matches during the World Cup.
Villa may not stop there and could sign more players who thrived at the World Cup, such as Senegal youngster Ibrahim Mbaye and his teammate Nicolas Jackson. Ecuador left-back Pervis Estupinan is likely to be the next arrival at Villa Park.
Throughout history, there have only been a few players who joined the West Midlands side after the world’s biggest international tournament. Interestingly, none signed for Villa after a World Cup prior to the 2000s.
The first player to join Aston Villa after impressing at the World Cup was Mark Kinsella. The former defensive midfielder signed for the Lions after helping the Republic of Ireland reach the Round of 16 at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Kinsella was sold by Charlton for a transfer fee of up to £1 million. However, his spell with Villa was largely forgettable. He made only 26 appearances and contributed two assists. The former midfielder, who earned 49 international caps, played regularly during the first half of the 2002/03 season but lost his place in the second half of the campaign and throughout the following season.
He eventually left Villa Park after one and a half seasons. Kinsella joined West Bromwich in the middle of the 2004 season.
The Ecuadorian defender signed for the Clarets and Blue after his impressive performances at the 2002 World Cup, despite failing to help his nation progress to the knockout stage. De la Cruz played in all three group-stage matches, including Ecuador’s 1-0 win over Croatia in their final game.
He joined Villa from Hibernian for £2.3 million and stayed for four years. The full-back, who earned 101 international caps, made 100 appearances, registering two goals and nine assists in all competitions. Ironically, he lost his place during his final season and even had a conflict with his manager, David O’Leary, before leaving in 2006.

The former Sweden international signed for Aston Villa after the 2002 World Cup from SC Heerenveen for a fee of up to £2 million. His spell at Villa Park was also largely forgettable. The former Bari forward made 44 appearances but failed to live up to expectations, scoring seven goals and providing two assists.
Allback did not play regularly, as manager David O’Leary preferred to rely on Juan Pablo Angel and Darius Vassell to lead the line. He eventually left the West Midlands to join Hansa Rostock, who were still competing in the Bundesliga.
The Colombian defensive midfielder arrived at Villa Park after the 2014 World Cup in a £4.7 million move from La Liga side Elche. He featured in four games during the tournament and played an important role as Colombia reached the quarterfinals.
Sanchez stayed until 2016, when the Lions were relegated. He then joined Fiorentina on loan after making 56 appearances and contributing one goal and one assist in all competitions before making permanent move in 2017.
The former Switzerland international was signed by Villa on a free transfer after the 2014 World Cup, despite making only one appearance during the tournament. He brought quality and experience at the highest level. Unfortunately, Senderos was plagued by injuries.
The former Arsenal defender made only nine appearances without registering a goal or an assist. Injuries once again disrupted his time at Villa, and he was eventually released in the middle of 2016 after being omitted from the first-team squad.
