Spain proved why many considered them the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final. Ferran Torres became La Furia Roja’s hero by scoring the winning goal in extra time to deliver Spain’s second World Cup title.
Chasing their second FIFA World Cup trophy, Luis de la Fuente’s side immediately imposed their usual possession-based football from kick-off. Spain controlled the match for long spells and forced Argentina to spend most of the game in the back foot.
However, La Furia Roja couldn’t convert their dominance into goals during normal time. Poor finishing, combined with another outstanding performance from Emiliano Martínez, kept Argentina level throughout the first 90 minutes.
Just before the end of normal time, Argentina were reduced to 10 men. Enzo Fernández received his second yellow card after committing another unnecessary foul, leaving Lionel Scaloni’s side with a difficult task in extra time.
Spain thought they had broken the deadlock early in extra time, but VAR ruled the goal out. Nevertheless, they kept pushing forward and finally found the breakthrough in the 106th minute. Ferran Torres fired a thunderous strike past Martínez to send the Spanish fans into celebration.
Argentina tried to respond during the closing stages, but Spain remained disciplined at the back and comfortably protected their advantage until the final whistle.
As a result, La Furia Roja secured a historic 1-0 victory and lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy for the second time after their triumph in 2010.
